\n

President Biden said Tuesday that his administration is examining whether he can order universal masking in public schools, overriding Republican governors in states like Florida and Texas.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t believe that I do [have that power], thus far,\u201d Biden told reporters during an event in the East Room of the White House. \u201cWe\u2019re checking that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended masking for all students, faculty, staff and visitors in K-12 schools last month due to the spread of the Delta variant. <\/p>\n

However, Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis has dismissed the CDC recommendation. After initially banning school districts from imposing mask mandates and suggesting funding cuts for those that do require masking, the governor suggested Monday that the state could\u00a0\u201cmove to withhold the salary\u201d of local officials who make face coverings mandatory. <\/p>\n

DeSantis has insisted that parents should get the final say on whether their kids wear masks in schools, not government or public health officials.<\/p>\n

Biden did not mention DeSantis by name Tuesday, but described his actions as \u201cdisingenuous.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I suggest that people, in zones where there is a high risk, wear the masks like you all are doing, I\u2019m told that government should get out of the way and not do that, they don\u2019t have the authority to do that,\u201d he mused aloud to reporters. \u201cAnd I find it interesting that some of the very people who are saying that, who hold government positions, are people who are threatening that if a school teacher asks a student if they\u2019ve been vaccinated, or if a principal says that \u2018everyone in my school should wear a mask,\u2019 or the school board votes for it, that governor will nullify that.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat governor has the authority to say you can\u2019t do that,\u201d Biden added. \u201cI find that totally counter-intuitive and quite frankly, disingenuous.\u201d<\/p>\n

The war of words between DeSantis and the White House over mask and vaccine mandates has simmered for more than a week, with Biden telling recalcitrant governors to \u201cget out of the way of the people who are trying to do the right thing\u201d and DeSantis accusing the administration of trying to implement a \u201cbiomedical security state.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adverse legal advice has not necessarily been an obstacle to the president. Last week, Biden allowed the CDC to implement a new 60-day eviction moratorium in much of the US despite admitting to reporters it was \u201cnot likely to pass constitutional muster.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, former CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield said Monday that his former agency must base their guidance on masking children in school on data and not on their opinion.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a variety of negative\u00a0public health consequences that happ<\/a>ened as a consequence\u00a0of doing virtual learning.\u00a0I think it\u2019s imperative that we\u00a0get the kids back to\u00a0face-to-face learning and do all\u00a0we can to keep them there,\u201d Redfield told Fox News<\/a>, adding: \u201cThere\u2019s very few studies that\u00a0really are compelling [to support masking] in that\u00a0setting of the classroom.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are critical questions,\u201d Redfield told Fox host Martha MacCallum elsewhere in the interview.\u00a0\u201cIs routine screening twice a\u00a0week in a school, is that the\u00a0way to limit intraschool transmission<\/a>? Is it wearing masks or not\u00a0wearing masks?\u00a0I\u2019m of the point of view this\u00a0has to be locally decided as\u00a0opposed to a general<\/a> mandate, particularly in the absence of\u00a0data.\u201d<\/p>\n
