It looks like a seriously powerful programming tool \u2014 and a slightly scary one.<\/p>\n<p>In <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SGUCcjHTmGY&amp;feature=emb_title\">a live demo<\/a>, OpenAI used the system to convert written English commands into simple <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>s and websites.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Creating a Space Game with OpenAI Codex\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Zm9B-DvwOgw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span>Sam Altman, OpenAI\u2019s CEO, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sama\/status\/1425149409944383489\">said<\/a> the system is merely a rudimentary version of what\u2019s possible. But he expects it to quickly improve:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I think Codex gets close to what most of us really want from computers \u2014 we say what we want, and they do it.\u00a0<span>Programming languages are an artifact of computers not being able to actually understand us, and humans and computers relying on a lingua franca to understand each other.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The demo gave a glimpse of how Codex democratizes software development and saves programmers time. But it also suggested that AI could quickly transform their jobs.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Codex_works\"><\/span>How Codex works<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Codex is a descendant of GPT-3, OpenAI\u2019s vaunted natural language model, but trained on billions of lines of code as well as written text. This allows it to<span>\u00a0translate plain English into code.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cGPT-3 is a system that you talk to and it talks back to you, so the only impact it has is in your mind,\u201d said OpenAI CTO Greg Brockman during the demo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Codex, you talk to it [and] it generates code, which means it can actually act in the computer world on your behalf. And I think that that\u2019s a really powerful thing \u2014 that you actually have a system that can carry out commands on your behalf.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u201cHello World\u201d with OpenAI Codex\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cLQc-5BJz4g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>According to OpenAI, Codex is most capable\u00a0in Python, but is also proficient in over a dozen languages, including Java<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Script<\/a>, Go, Perl, PHP, Ruby, Swift, TypeScript, and Shell.<\/p>\n<p>The company has now invited businesses and developers to build on top Codex through a new API. You can join the waitlist for <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/share.hsforms.com\/1Lfc7WtPLRk2ppXhPjcYY-A4sk30\">the private beta here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Threats_and_opportunities\"><\/span>Threats and opportunities<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Codex demo was certainly impressive, but the system isn\u2019t perfect, as OpenAI admits.<\/p>\n<p>The company recently published <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/2107.03374.pdf\">a paper<\/a> that highlights several limitations and biases. Nonetheless, the model\u2019s simplicity and adaptability provide a promising foundation for AI coding assistants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe code neural networks that you will have in the future will be far better than this,\u201d said OpenAI Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever. \u201cThis is only the beginning of an exciting future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It may well be exciting, but some programmers have raised concerns about a potential threat to their jobs.
