MADRID \u2014 Instagram has apologized for removing the official poster for Spanish director Pedro Almod\u00f3var\u2019s new film from the social<\/a> network because it showed a female nipple, after the poster\u2019s designer complained of censorship.<\/p>\n

Instagram\u2019s parent company Facebook told The Associated Press on Wednesday that several images of the poster for \u201cMadres Paralelas,\u201d which shows a lactating nipple, were removed \u201cfor breaking our rules against nudity\u201d after they were uploaded on Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe do, however, make exceptions to allow nudity in certain circumstances, which includes when there\u2019s clear artistic context. We\u2019ve therefore restored posts sharing the Almod\u00f3var movie poster to Instagram, and we\u2019re really sorry for any confusion caused,\u201d the company said in an emailed statement.<\/p>\n

Facebook and Instagram\u2019s longstanding rules \u2014 and previous bans \u2014 have spurred the use of the #FreetheNipple movement and hashtag on Instagram, which is used by many artists and celebrities to portray nipples despite the rules. The ban does not extend to male nipples.<\/p>\n

The poster\u2019s Spanish designer Javier Ja\u00e9n told AP that he had questioned whether the poster would have trouble on social networks but stayed true to his vision after receiving the personal backing of Almod\u00f3var. \u201cHe told me that he had made films with posters his whole life, long before Instagram, and he would keep doing so after Instagram, too,\u201d Ja\u00e9n said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is probably the first image I saw when I was born. A company like Instagram tells me my work is dangerous, that people shouldn\u2019t see it, that it\u2019s pornographic. How many people are they telling that their body is bad, that their body is dangerous?\u201d Ja\u00e9n added, noting he had received overwhelming support and thousands of people had reposted his poster on Instagram.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey say their technology<\/a> can\u2019t differentiate the context. I don\u2019t care. Change your technology then,\u201d the designer said.<\/p>\n

Ja\u00e9n had written in a post<\/a> that the poster had been removed from his Instagram page on Tuesday: \u201cAs expected, @instagram took down the poster that we made for the latest Almod\u00f3var film #madresparalelas.\u201d After reposting the image, he said, it was allowed to stay.<\/p>\n

A request for comment from Almod\u00f3var\u2019s production company went unanswered.<\/p>\n

\u201cMadres Paralelas,\u201d starring Pen\u00e9lope Cruz, will open the Venice Film Festival on Sept. 1.<\/p>\n
