Mother knows best \u2014 and these moms say breast milk is the best milk for their school-age kids.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cMy daughter Piper will be 7 years old in November and I breastfeed her twice a day or whenever she says she needs it,\u201d extended breastfeeding advocate Kim Summer, 40, told The Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt bedtime, she\u2019ll say, \u2018Can I have boo boo?\u2019 and I give it to her,\u201d the lactation specialist and birth doula added.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s a special bonding time for us that\u2019s comforting, reciprocal and organic.\u201d<\/p>\n

Coco Austin, 42, wife of \u201cLaw & Order: SVU\u201d star Ice-T, 63, recently defended her decision to continue breastfeeding<\/a> their 5-year-old daughter Chanel. <\/p>\n

\u201cChanel still likes my boobs,\u201d the busty model told US Weekly ahead of World Breastfeeding Week (Aug. 1 to Aug. 7). <\/p>\n

\u201cWhy take that away from her?\u201d she continued. \u201cIf she doesn\u2019t want it, alright, that\u2019s where you stop it. But I\u2019m not just going to say no.\u201d<\/p>\n

Austin\u2019s milk-fueled admission sparked a firestorm of controversy on social media<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Extended breastfeeding attackers have deemed the former Playboy pinup \u201csick\u201d and \u201cperverted\u201d \u2014 criticisms Summer has also endured. <\/p>\n

\u201cI get a lot of really insane hate online,\u201d the Santa Barbara, Calif., native said. <\/p>\n

She unashamedly shares photos of herself breastfeeding Piper on Instagram in order to normalize long-term nursing. <\/p>\n

\u201cPeople tell me I should die, I\u2019m gross and that Child Protective Services should take my baby away from me,\u201d Summer said. <\/p>\n

But she\u2019s empowered, rather than deterred, by the detractors. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to keep sharing our breastfeeding pictures because it\u2019s important that people learn to become comfortable around seeing mothers nursing an older child,\u201d she insisted \u2014 noting that in addition to breast milk, Piper enjoys a \u201cwell-rounded diet\u201d of fruits, vegetables and her favorite snack, cheese enchiladas. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt supports her physical, emotional and mental health,\u201d Summer added. \u201cAnd I\u2019m going to do whatever I need to as a mom to make sure she stays healthy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Women like Summer make up the less than 2% of American mothers who breastfeed beyond 24 months<\/a>, per research in the Developmental Psychology journal.<\/p>\n

Jada Shapiro, founder of Brooklyn-based lactation education platform Boober<\/a>, says breastfeeding beyond infancy and toddlerhood can be beneficial to both the mother and child.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cResearch shows that children who are breastfed for a longer length of time are at a reduced risk for developing respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases, diabetes and some childhood cancers,\u201d said Shapiro, citing a study from the American Academy of Pediatrics<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe World Health Organization also found that women who breastfeed have a reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancers,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Then there are the emotional perks. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we\u2019re breastfeeding, oxytocin, which is sometimes called the \u2018love\u2019 hormone, is released from the mother and child and that bonds us closer together,\u201d Shapiro continued. \u201cSo prolonging your breastfeeding experience with your child beyond the 6- to 12-month-old marks only extends that bond.\u201d<\/p>\n

Upper East Side mother of five boys Marisa Mayer says breastfeeding her two youngest sons until they were 5 and 6 years old, respectively, helped solidify their mother-and-child relationship.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m close with all my children,\u201d said Mayer, 45, who\u2019s volunteered as a lactation support leader with the La Leche League of Manhattan<\/a> for 13 years. <\/p>\n

The international organization helps mothers navigate the various intricacies of breastfeeding.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I\u2019m very close to my two youngest, who are now 13 and 10, and we developed that special relationship over a longer period of time through breastfeeding,\u201d Mayer added.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She credits extended breastfeeding with making her boys emotionally strong and self-assured preteens.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re very confident and they\u2019re able to express themselves [freely] because they grew up in this safe and comforting space we\u2019ve created with this type of bonding,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mayer says extensive nursing has been the most rewarding parenting feat.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cBreastfeeding my kids for as long as we needed to was a beautiful experience,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s my life\u2019s greatest accomplishment.\u201d<\/p>\n
