Washington, D.C.\u00a0health officials say the indoor mask mandate, now in its second week, may be in place until Thanksgiving given the rising number of cases and stagnated\u00a0vaccination\u00a0rates.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Patrick Ashley, a senior deputy director of the D.C. health department, told\u00a0WRC-TV<\/a>\u00a0that the mask mandate will likely be in effect for the weeks to come.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re very hopeful that we\u2019ll get back to normal around the holidays,\u201d Ashley said, adding: \u201cWe\u2019re hopeful that by Thanksgiving we\u2019ll be in a different spot, but that relies on people getting vaccinated.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

D.C. has been experiencing a steady climb in COVID cases, and on Monday reported a 7-day average of 125 new\u00a0COVID\u00a0cases per day. Meanwhile, vaccination rates have leveled off.\u00a0<\/p>\n

D.C.\u2019s mask mandate, which went into effect on July 31, requires residents over the age of 2 to wear face masks indoors, regardless of vaccination.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The order followed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines issued the week prior that recommended those in areas of the country with \u201chigh\u201d or \u201csubstantial\u201d COVID-19 transmission wear masks indoors.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser announced that all city employees and contractors and contractors \u2013 including teachers, police officers, and sanitation workers \u2013 must be fully vaccinated by Sept. 19 or take a weekly COVID test,\u00a0FOX 5 reported<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n
