Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul wishes Gov. Andrew Cuomo would not stick around for 14 days after announcing his resignation \u2014 saying Wednesday that his decision to give two weeks notice was not her choice. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not what I asked for,\u201d said Hochul of the disgraced governor\u2019s plan to have a 14-day transition period after quitting in the wake of a sexual harassment scandal. <\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, I\u2019m looking forward to a smooth transition, which he promised.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hochul insisted she\u2019s ready right now \u2014 and has been for years \u2014 to serve as the state\u2019s chief executive. <\/p>\n

\u201cThey viewed it as necessary. I\u2019m prepared to take office, as any lieutenant governor is, from the very first hour you\u2019re sworn in as lieutenant governor,\u201d Hochul explained during a press conference in Albany, where she spoke publicly for the first time since Cuomo Wednesday said he\u2019ll leave office.<\/p>\n

In a bizarre decision, Cuomo said Tuesday that he\u2019s stepping aside \u2014 but won\u2019t leave office until 14 days later. In contrast, after former Gov. Elliot Spitzer resigned amid a sex scandal, David Paterson assumed the top position in New York State government the same day Spitzer stepped down. <\/p>\n

Hochul recalled that the current governor told her the gap between Cuomo announcing he\u2019ll leave the governor\u2019s mansion due to the fallout from the state Attorney General<\/a>\u2019s probe and her taking over is aimed at encouraging \u201ccontinuity.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cHe spoke to me about wanting to make sure that the transition \u2014 that continuity is important, that I have an opportunity to meet the cabinet officials, other people as well,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Hochul promised to \u201ctake advantage\u201d of the gap and to \u201cengage with the people of the state of New York.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the end of the 14 days,\u201d she said, \u201cI look forward to coming back to a venue like this and to make sure that we are ready to deal with all the challenges that we face.\u201d<\/p>\n
