But today\u2019s cars are advanced analytic data centers on wheels, with capabilities that can be added, amended, or expanded with a simple over-the-air (OTA) update. Automakers can choose when (and if) to turn on certain features\u2013and it\u2019s at a price.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This week writer\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MartinSFP\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Martin SFP Bryant raised the issue on Twitter in response to the latest Mercedes-Benz update .<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">\ud83d\ude44 \ud83d\ude44 \u201cMercedes-Benz will electronically limit the steering angle of the rear wheels, but there will be an option after purchase to pay the company more money to increase that steering angle by a few degrees for a tighter turning radius.\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/7ClIW1HVMJ\">https:\/\/t.co\/7ClIW1HVMJ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Martin SFP Bryant (@MartinSFP) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MartinSFP\/status\/1425386255064391682?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 11, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MartinSFP\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He notes,\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0\u201cMercedes-Benz will electronically limit the steering angle of the rear wheels, but there will be an option after purchase to pay the company more money to increase that steering angle by a few degrees for a tighter turning radius.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">All-electric luxury salon Mercedes-Benz EQ has an OTA functionality to modify<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/media.daimler.com\/marsMediaSite\/en\/instance\/ko\/The-future-of-mobility-starts-now-start-of-sales-for-the-EQS.xhtml?oid=50981901&amp;ls=L2VuL2luc3RhbmNlL2tvLnhodG1sP29pZD00ODYxMzM5MSZyZWxJZD02MDgyOSZmcm9tT2lkPTQ4NjEzMzkxJnJlc3VsdEluZm9UeXBlSWQ9NDA2MjYmdmlld1R5cGU9dGh1bWJzJnNvcnREZWZpbml0aW9uPVBVQkxJU0hFRF9BVC0yJnRodW1iU2NhbGVJbmRleD0xJnJvd0NvdW50c0luZGV4PTUmZnJvbUluZm9UeXBlSWQ9NDA2Mjg!&amp;rs=0\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0the rear-axle steering with a ten-degree steering angle<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I\u2019m not entirely clear how great a benefit this is to drivers in reality, but it raises more significant issues about OTA updates and their monetization.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"OTA_updates_are_nothing_new\"><\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">OTA updates are nothing new<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The reality is that BMW and other OEMs have offered over-the-air optional software as an upsell for over a decade, including its\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.am-online.com\/news\/2005\/7\/22\/bmw-launches-see-in-the-dark-technology\/9396\/\">High Beam Assistant<\/a>\u00a0as an optional extra.\u00a0OTA updates have been offered in vehicles since the late 2000s, including <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> sub<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">script<\/a>ions and Tesla\u2019s \u2018Caroke.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Martin is not the first person to raise this issue on Twitter. In March,\u00a0<\/span>deputy <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> editor of <em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Car Magazine<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, Jake Groves, shared a tweet:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Night drive in a 530e. What happens if we pay for several driving features that suddenly stop working in traffic due to a glitch in our payment?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Further, should we have to pay to switch on functions\u2013including security functions in some instances\u2013that an OEM has already created?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Then, there\u2019s the issue of how changing functionalities can change a car\u2019s status. Mercedes Benz says it intends to offer \u201ctemporary activations and free trial periods\u201d of their new OTA updated features to entice customers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">For example, if you \u2018turn on\u2019 L3 ADAS functionalities such as the ability to change lanes autonomously, what does this mean for your existing insurance classification? Most countries are still grappling with these issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It also raises questions around charging drivers an additional fee to unlock a safety feature. As vehicle automation increases towards Levels 4 and 5, we can expect more OTA updates, and many of these will be fee-based.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This week, Huawei had\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.huaweicentral.com\/new-ota-update-technology-of-huawei-aims-to-prevent-vehicle-software-dangers\/\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">an OTA update patent approved<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0by the Chinese intellectual property office.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The patent will prevent smart vehicles from experiencing hidden dangers during the update installation. This could include where and when OTA updates are installed. This could include driver, OEM, or in the future, vehicle led installations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tesla_fined_for_Battery_OTA_update\"><\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Tesla fined for Battery OTA update\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Last week, we saw a Tesla lawsuit settlement in response to an OTA update. According to\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/tesla-agrees-pay-15-mln-settle-claims-over-temporary-battery-voltage-reduction-2021-07-29\/\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Reuters<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, Tesla agreed to pay $1.5 million to settle claims that it used software to cut usable battery capacity on 1,743 Model S sedans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Owners initially saw a 10% reduction lasting about three months, then a smaller 7% reduction lasting another seven months. Tesla restored total capacity in March 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_litmus_test_for_future_features\"><\/span>A litmus test for future features<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">We\u2019re preparing for a time when we ride as passengers, not drivers, where vehicle automation includes not only OTA updates but vehicle-to-everything (V2E) trading, where the car is a marketplace and a source of revenue for OEMs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">OTA updates mean personalization. We could buy a second-hand smart car and make it an entirely different beast than that enjoyed by its previous owners. We could carry our subscription preferences across vehicles as we hire rather than buy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ultimately, OTA updates allow OEMs and users to try out new features and test what and when people are willing to pay.
