New York\u2019s socialists are ready to man the barricades in the wake of Gov. Andrew Cuomo\u2019s shock resignation \u2014 declaring Wednesday that it\u2019s time for them to \u201cseize the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an afternoon email blast, the New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America said that \u201cwith Cuomo gone, we have removed the biggest roadblocks to our socialist platform.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have so many campaigns whose potential for victory just increased exponentially,\u201d the email said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are within striking distance of winning universal healthcare, social housing, and a Green New Deal.\u201d<\/p>\n

NYC-DSA claimed credit for helping oust Cuomo, saying it \u201cwas one of the first organizations\u201d to demand his impeachment over the sexual harassment scandal that forced him to resign in disgrace on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe evidence was clear that Cuomo had abused his power to harass almost a dozen women and that, without enormous pressure, he would never give up power,\u201d the email said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why we fought for months with our progressive allies and our friends in organized labor to make sure the pressure was so overwhelming, Cuomo had no choice but to step down.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to dancing on his political grave, the group also solicited donations from its supporters, saying, \u201cWith your help today, NYC-DSA can seize the moment to help build a state for the many instead of just the privileged few.\u201d<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul, who\u2019s set to succeed Cuomo when his resignation takes effect, which he said would be Aug. 24, didn\u2019t immediately return a request for comment.<\/p>\n

But veteran Democratic consultant Hank Sheinkopf said that Hochul \u201cshould stay close to the center\u201d if she wants to win a full term as governor.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe issues in next year\u2019s election will likely be crime, COVID and jobs. If the left controls the discussion, Hochul loses,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe left\u2019s position to defund the police is not a winning policy or strategy in a statewide election.\u201d<\/p>\n

Democratic mayoral candidate Eric Adams, who last month told supporters said that \u201cDSA socialists are mobilizing to stop\u201d him, said at an event in Brooklyn, \u201cIt\u2019s clear I did not get one of those letters.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adams also noted the pending peaceful transfer of power from Cuomo to Hochul, saying, \u201cThat is what is amazing about America that I have never witnessed in socialist countries.\u201d<\/p>\n

Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa responded to the DSA email by saying that Cuomo\u2019s resignation gave the GOP \u201ca real opportunity to get back into the governor\u2019s office.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBeware of what you feel you\u2019re going to gain,\u201d he said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
