Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p> On Tuesday, decentralized-finance platform Poly Network said it had been hacked, with losses estimated around $613 million in various crypto assets, and pleaded with the hacker to contact the company and return the haul.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       On Wednesday, the hacker <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>arently did just that \u2014 and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PolyNetwork2\/status\/1425509322126024708\" class=\"icon none\">at last count had returned about $260 million<\/a> of cryptocurrencies, tokens and stablecoins from three separate blockchains \u2014 Binance Smart Chain, Ethereum and Polygon \u2014 Poly Network said.<\/p>\n<p>In messages embedded within Ethereum<br \/>\n        ETHUSD,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/108573964\/realtime\" class=\"negative\">-1.68%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       transactions sent from the account controlled by the hacker, a person claiming to be responsible for the hack said that they had never intended to keep the digital assets, and took them \u201cfor fun.\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tomrobin\/status\/1425506344933773316\" class=\"icon none\">In a lengthy self-Q&amp;A<\/a>, the person said they had sought to expose a Poly Network vulnerability, and \u201cdidn\u2019t want to cause a _real_ panic in the crypto world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While millions of dollars\u2019 worth of digital assets were still missing as of Wednesday evening, the hacker said they were purposefully being returned slowly so the hacker  could protect their identity and occasionally \u201crest.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pains they have suffered is temporary but memorable,\u201d the hacker said of Poly Network, adding that \u201cI would like to give them tips on how to secure their networks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The hack may not have been so altruistic, though.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think this demonstrates\u00a0that even if you can steal cryptoassets, laundering them and cashing out is extremely difficult, due to the transparency\u00a0of the blockchain and the use of blockchain analytics,\u201d Tom Robinson, co-founder and chief scientist of blockchain analytics company Elliptic Inc., said in an email. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn this case the hacker concluded that the safest option was\u00a0just\u00a0to return the stolen assets.\u201d\u00a0<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"byline article__byline\">\n<p>
