\n Germany\u2019s third-largest state has banned girls from wearing full-face Muslim veils in its schools, according to a report.<\/p>\n

The move by officials in Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg came amid growing national controversy over the ultra-conservative religious practice \u2014 and followed previous decisions by nine European Union countries to outlaw \u201cface-covering clothing.\u201d<\/p>\n

It also came despite a court ruling in March that reversed a similar ban in Hamburg, Germany\u2019s second-largest city, Deutsche Welle reported.<\/p>\n

The premier of Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg, Winfried Kretschmann, a leading Green party politician, said that full-face veils had no place in a free society \u2014 while conceding that few students actually wore them, DW said.<\/p>\n

The ban doesn\u2019t affect women attending the state\u2019s universities, which Kretschmann described as a more complicated issue because they\u2019re adults, according to DW, Germany\u2019s publicly funded international news<\/a> operation.<\/p>\n

Other Green party leaders in Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg have claimed that the Islamic veil, known as a \u201cniqab,\u201d along with the full-body covering known as a \u201cburqa,\u201d were \u201csymbols of oppression,\u201d DW said.<\/p>\n

Prominent conservative politicians, including Julia Kl\u00f6ckner of Prime Minister Angela Merkel\u2019s Christian Democrats, have called for a nationwide ban on full-face Muslim veils.<\/p>\n

But the Green party has been split on the issue, with a spokesman for its faction in parliament saying that people who live in a democracy should be free to wear symbols of their religion.<\/p>\n

A poll of Germans last year found that 54% favored a ban on burqas.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
