The movie\u2019s not even out, but some reviews are already in, and commentators want to know: Who greenlighted this?<\/p>\n

Netflix\u2019s upcoming Tokyo-set action flick \u201cKate\u201d tells the story of an assassin \u2014 played by \u201cBirds of Prey\u201d star Mary Elizabeth Winstead \u2014 who, after being poisoned on the job while attempting to kill a member of the yakuza, decides to spend her final 24 hours taking revenge against the Japanese crime syndicate. In the process, she befriends the daughter of a former target and gets advice from co-star Woody Harrelson\u2019s character.\u00a0<\/p>\n

While a classic-enough vengeance plot in theory, a trailer for the film that dropped this month has viewers questioning who decided that, after a year of violence against the Asian community, a movie about a white woman going on a murder spree against the Japanese mob was possibly a good idea.<\/p>\n

\u201cWait\u2026so the premise is this white girl is seeking revenge on folks who poisoned her because she was trying to kill the head of the Yakuza?\u201d one critic commented<\/a> in response to the trailer. \u201cYeah hard pass.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cSo a movie where a white woman beats up and kills Asian people. Yakuza so technically Japanese, though I doubt only Japanese actors were hired for the Yakuza roles. That is the premise of this movie,\u201d wrote<\/a> another viewer. \u201cEnough people thought this was a good idea that we\u2019re getting it. Wtf.\u201d<\/p>\n

Others summarized<\/a> their understanding of the film\u2019s plot as \u201cone white women killing a whole lot of Asian people over the course of a movie\u201d and<\/a> \u201cWhite Girl on Asian Killing Spree.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Having white protagonists<\/a> star in a film with Asian antagonists and \u201cAsians as a cultural background<\/a>\u201d after the recent \u201crise of attacks against<\/a>\u201d the Asian community feels obviously \u201cyucky<\/a>\u201d and wrong, many noted. The flick not only<\/a> \u201cfetishizes\/villainizes asians & asian culture\u201d but also \u201creinforces the \u2018white saviour\u2019 stereotype.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cKate\u201d hits Netflix and select theaters on Sept. 10.<\/p>\n

Netflix did not immedia<\/a>tely return The Post\u2019s request for comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n
