SANTIAGO, Aug 10 \u2013 A punishing, decade-long\u00a0drought\u00a0in Chile has gone from bad to worse due to a scorching July, a month which typically brings midwinter weather showering the capital Santiago in rain and snow.<\/p>\n

But a lack of precipitation this year has left the towering and typically snowcapp<\/a>ed Andes above the city mostly bare, reservoir levels low and farm fields parched. The scenes, government officials say, are clear evidence of global warming.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, a central Santiago weather station had\u00a0recorded just 3 inches of rainfall so far this year compared to last year\u2019s 7 inches and an average amount of 9.9 inches, according to\u00a0Chile\u2019s\u00a0Meteorological Service.<\/p>\n

Science<\/a> Minister Andres Couve told Reuters on Tuesday that the steady decline in water reserves due to\u00a0climate\u00a0change\u00a0was now a \u201cnational priority.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added the government was addressing the crisis by investing in water conservation and storage, creating a post for a subsecretary of water and establishing a scientist working group on water management, as well as a\u00a0climate\u00a0change\u00a0observatory.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe already have overwhelming evidence and it is climatic evidence,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are\u00a0seeing a very significant decrease in rainfall and that is generating water shortages.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Monday, United Nations\u00a0climate\u00a0scientists warned that extreme heat waves, which not long ago struck once every 50 years, are now to be expected once per decade.<\/p>\n

Droughts and downpours are also becoming more frequent, the Intergovernmental Panel on\u00a0Climate\u00a0Change\u00a0(IPCC) report said and humans are \u201cunequivocally\u201d to blame through greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n

Couve said Chile, a long thin nation with the world\u2019s driest deserts at its north, glaciers, forests and wetlands throughout and the Antarctic at its south, had bountiful proof of\u00a0climate\u00a0change\u00a0in action.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe scientific evidence is there but also the weather events are happening with a frequency and intensity that\u00a0makes\u00a0it very easy for people to\u00a0see,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Some scientists and politicians in Chile are warning of growing and potentially irreversible, water shortages in the central region whose Mediterranean\u00a0climate\u00a0has made it home to vineyards and farms, as well as a third of its population in Santiago, the country\u2019s economic engine.<\/p>\n

Two rivers that provide Santiago with water \u2013 the Mapocho and the Maipo \u2013 are drier than they were in 2019, the driest year in\u00a0Chile\u2019s\u00a0history, Public Works Minister Alfredo Moreno said, prompting regulators to clamp down on water use and\u00a0seek alternative sources.<\/p>\n

Chile\u2019s\u00a0utilities companies have invested heavily in new infrastructure to avoid the arrival of \u201cDay Zero,\u201d \u2013 the day the taps run dry, a threat which prompted major water restrictions in Cape Town, South Africa and Chennai, India, in recent years.<\/p>\n

That day however \u201carrived almost a decade ago for nearly 400 thousand people who inhabit rural areas of Chile and today receive water in tanker trucks,\u201d said Raul Cordero, University of Santiago climatologist and leader of its Antarctic Investigation Group.<\/p>\n

Cordero said the situation faced by rural communities in central Chile is likely to spread and worsen over time.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is unlikely the precipitation we once had in the central region in the 1980s and 1990s (will) return, or that we recover that\u00a0climate,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Chile must build more reservoirs and desalination plants, which are increasingly relied on by its critical mining sector, he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur only advantage is we now know how\u00a0climate\u00a0change\u00a0will hit us hardest, so we know what we need to do to face the consequences,\u201d he said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
