Leftist: NSA\u2019s Carlson Targeting Was No Joke<\/strong><\/p>\n

The National Security Agency\u2019s inspector general<\/a> announced a probe into allegations that the NSA wrongly intercepted the communications of Fox News<\/a> host Tucker Carlson \u2014 which, argues Glenn Greenwald at his Substack<\/a>, shows that Carlson\u2019s claim is far from \u201cfrivolous.\u201d IG Robert P. Storch \u201cis a long-time \u00adexecutive-branch functionary\u201d and \u201ca widely \u00adrespected bureaucrat in Washington\u201d who has served in Republican and Democratic administrations, including a stint as the Justice Department\u2019s deputy IG in the Obama era. When Carlson first aired his concerns, \u201ccorporate media<\/a> outlets largely sided with the NSA, mocking Carlson for being conspiratorial and even accusing him of fabricating a story.\u201d But the IG probe gives good reason to worry that NSA operatives unlawfully targeted him and sought to \u201cweaponize the intelligence against him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Libertarian: GOP Joins in Sham Spending Bills<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill is a sham\u201d that only \u201csets up a much bigger round of explicitly partisan spending later,\u201d roars Peter Suderman at Reason<\/a>, noting sarcastically that it includes \u201cessential infrastructure provisions like, er, requiring unproven new drunk-driving-prevention technology<\/a>\u201d and \u201creporting requirements for cryptocurrency.\u201d Yet 19 Republicans voted for it anyway, claiming the bill will be deficit-neutral, though the Congressional Budget Office puts the net cost as at least $256 billion. They say it will restrain Democrats\u2019 bid to shell out $3.5 trillion on another \u201cbig government, progressive-agenda spending bill,\u201d but it does \u201cno such thing.\u201d In fact, Republicans are backing a \u201ctwo-bill deal.\u201d Why? To show that \u201cCongress can get things done\u201d \u2014 but they\u2019re \u201cbig, terrible things.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eco desk: Greens\u2019 Apocalypse Porn<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe green movement is a doomsday cult,\u201d declares Spiked\u2019s Brendan O\u2019Neill<\/a>. \u201cApocalypse porn is everywhere,\u201d with \u201cimages of fire and floods\u201d meant to raise awareness \u201cabout man\u2019s self-made apocalypse\u201d: \u201cChange your ways or people will die.\u201d It lets lawmakers off the hook: \u201cTreating every disparate natural event as proof of the existence of an all-seeing, all-punishing global monster called \u2018climate change\u2019 absolves local politicians of responsibility for tackling natural crises.\u201d Worse, this worldview \u201cexplicitly demotes what ought to be the great, galvanizing goal of \u00adhumankind \u2014 the liberation of every human being from poverty \u2014 in favor of insisting that progress has gone too far, economic growth must be \u00adreversed, and we must all settle for less.\u201d Those who believe this \u201cwhen 3 billion people still live in extreme poverty\u201d scare \u201cme far more than any wildfire.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the right: Lightfoot\u2019s Unequal Indignation<\/strong><\/p>\n

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot \u201ccan occasionally if inconsistently work herself up into a lather over COVID protocols, but she is far more reserved in her public comments about Chicago\u2019s violence problem,\u201d points out Jack Dunphy at PJ Media<\/a>. She was \u201csomber and measured in her remarks about the death of Chicago Police Officer Ella French,\u201d calling out \u201cthe common enemy\u201d of \u201cgangs and guns.\u201d But her remarks lacked \u201cthe moral indignation she brought when she excoriated people who were so depraved as to throw parties last summer,\u201d whom she threatened with citation or arrest. These \u201chollow words from the mayor\u201d confirm for Chicago cops that when \u201cconfrontations go awry, as some always will, Mayor Lightfoot and the media and the racial-grievance industry will rush in to demonize\u201d police.<\/p>\n

Media watch: Journalism\u2019s Cuomo Problem<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cCollateral damage in\u201d Gov. Cuomo\u2019s \u201cpolitical implosion\u201d includes \u201cthe reputation of his brother, Chris Cuomo, the CNN host \u2014 and the integrity of the industry in which he works,\u201d warns LZ Granderson in the Los \u00adAngeles Times<\/a>, slamming \u201clast year\u2019s love-fest between the two, in which Chris repeatedly interviewed Andrew on CNN.\u201d With Andrew \u201ca high-profile face of the government response\u201d to the pandemic, having his brother interview him \u201cwas a completely avoidable, self-inflicted wound that has come back to haunt all involved.\u201d Public trust in the media is \u00ad\u201cimpossible if we cross clear lines with stunts like presenting the Brothers Cuomo as a news segment.\u201d <\/p>\n
