Here are six things business owners should do first.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Make_sure_you_need_help\"><\/span><strong>1. Make sure you need help<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p> First, look for signs that your business can\u2019t move forward without assistance.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re \u201cpersonally at capacity\u201d and receiving more orders than you can handle, it may be time to hire someone, says Phelan Spence, a services and financial analysis associate at JumpStart, a Cleveland-based nonprofit that works with entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n<p>Hiring may also be on the horizon for business owners who are missing deadlines, fielding customer complaints or thinking about taking on a big project.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also see: <\/strong>Struggling small businesses are flocking to crowdfunding to raise capital<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Know_your_numbers\"><\/span><strong>2. Know your numbers<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Before hiring full- or part-time employees, your cash flow should be steady enough to support regular paychecks.<\/p>\n<p>Business owners need to plan for expenses beyond wages, including <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Social<\/a> Security, Medicare and\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdwallet.com\/article\/small-business\/small-business-tax-preparation?utm_campaign=ct_prod&amp;utm_content=1040266&amp;utm_medium=wire&amp;utm_source=syndication&amp;utm_term=anne-stanleymarketwatch-com\" class=\"icon none\">payroll taxes<\/a>, and, in many states, workers\u2019 compensation. Benefits like health insurance add additional costs.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, bringing in a new employee can help you generate more revenue by expanding your capacity.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>Spence says metrics like average monthly sales and average revenue per sale can help you understand how hiring someone will affect your finances and when it\u2019s time to take that step.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c (Hiring is) not necessarily tied to a date \u2014 it\u2019s really tied to hitting that number of customers or number of projects or products or services,\u201d Spence says.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also read:<\/strong> How to get grants for your small business<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Find_professional_support\"><\/span><strong>3. Find professional support<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Outside experts can help you navigate the hiring process. That team might include an attorney,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdwallet.com\/article\/small-business\/bookkeeping-best-practices-for-startups-and-small-businesses?utm_campaign=ct_prod&amp;utm_content=1040266&amp;utm_medium=wire&amp;utm_source=syndication&amp;utm_term=anne-stanleymarketwatch-com\" class=\"icon none\">bookkeeper<\/a>, accountant and HR consultant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMake sure that you get the advice of a professional to kind of lead you along the way,\u201d says Angel Washington, owner of Cleveland-based medical billing and coding business Consult 2 Code. \u201cYou just want to make sure you do everything right from the beginning so you don\u2019t have to go back and fix things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Expert advice can help you stay compliant with employment law, like understanding when you can hire independent contractors and when you need employees, and making sure new hires fill out the necessary tax forms.<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Set_up_payroll_and_accounting_systems\"><\/span><strong>4. Set up payroll and accounting systems<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>When a business owner hires a new employee, they need to gather certain documents for tax and legal reasons. And when they pay that employee, they need to withhold money for tax and insurance payments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you\u2019re at this stage, it is really important to start thinking about your systems and invest a little bit of time and energy in your systems,\u201d Spence says.<\/p>\n<p>Those systems could include\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdwallet.com\/article\/small-business\/payroll-software-for-small-business?utm_campaign=ct_prod&amp;utm_content=1040266&amp;utm_medium=wire&amp;utm_source=syndication&amp;utm_term=anne-stanleymarketwatch-com\" class=\"icon none\">payroll software<\/a>, most of which can automatically withhold funds from paychecks, or accounting software, which you can use to keep your finances organized as your business grows.<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Position_new_employees_for_success\"><\/span><strong>5. Position new employees for success<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Your first employee is the first person that you are entrusting your vision to, says April D. Halliburton, founder and president of virtual HR company All-4-HR. Halliburton is also a volunteer mentor with\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.score.org\/\" class=\"icon none\">SCORE<\/a>, a nonprofit organization that offers business owners free resources, including webinars and how-to guides about hiring employees.<\/p>\n<p>Start by writing a clear job de<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">script<\/a>ion, Halliburton says, and don\u2019t rely totally on a template because \u201c10 different companies are going to have receptionists doing things 10 different ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Halliburton encourages business owners to work with an HR professional to create an employee handbook so employees know how to navigate the workplace. Also, consider creating manuals that walk new employees through key tasks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think you make the biggest impact within the first few months,\u201d Halliburton says. \u201cThe last thing you want to do is not give the effort and energy that is needed \u2026 when you\u2019re hiring your employees and growing your staff and culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Get_ready_to_let_go\"><\/span><strong>6. Get ready to let go<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Washington started Consult 2 Code as a solopreneur.
