\n Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Wednesday cited \u201cThe Satanic Verses\u201d novelist Salman Rushdie in a condemnation of what he called \u201cthe grievance-industrial complex,\u201d which he said was stifling free speech.<\/p>\n

The Kentucky Republican linked a \u201ccycle on nonsense\u201d against unpopular opinions and \u201ceroded\u201d rule of law following unrest in cities as threats to US freedom.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe author Salman Rushdie, who was himself threatened with death for controversial speech, once said this: \u2018Two things form the bedrock of any open society \u2014 freedom of expression and the rule of law. If you don\u2019t have those things, you don\u2019t have a free country,’\u201d McConnell said on the Senate floor.<\/p>\n

\u201cFree expression and the rule of law. Exactly the two things we\u2019ve seen eroded in recent months.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rushdie this month joined an open letter from academics, including political leftists, against censorship of political debate. Rushdie faced Islamist death threats, including a fatwa by Iran\u2019s then-supreme leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, over his 1988 novel \u201cThe Satanic Verses,\u201d which was seen by some as portraying the Prophet Muhammad in an irreverent manner.<\/p>\n

\u201cRushdie recently signed an open letter with other intellectuals, many liberals, sounding the alarm on this cultural poison,\u201d McConnell said. \u201c\u2018Editors are fired,\u2019 they wrote, \u2018books are withdrawn \u2026 journalists are barred from writing on certain topics \u2026 professors are investigated \u2026 steadily narrow[ing] the boundaries of what can be said without the threat of reprisal.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can guess what happ<\/a>ened next. The grievance-industrial complex came after the letter itself. The authors were accused of advancing bigotry. And the cycle of nonsense started all over again.\u201d<\/p>\n

At least two letter signers \u2014 historian Kerri Greenidge and author Jennifer Finney Boylan \u2014 later repudiated it.<\/p>\n

Letter signer and Harry Potter author JK Rowling shamed recantations, writing to Boylan on Twitter<\/a>: \u201cBe sure to publicly repent of your association with Goody Rowling before unfollowing and volunteer to operate the ducking stool next time, as penance.\u201d<\/p>\n

McConnell cited the recent resignation letter of Bari Weiss from the New York Times opinion section protesting alleged orthodoxy in acceptable viewpoints, and attacks on Princeton University professor Joshua Katz over an op-ed.<\/p>\n

McConnell said, \u201cThe United States of America needs free speech. We need free expression. And all of us, from all perspectives, need the courage to speak up and defend it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Supporting free speech is politically popular, according to poll results released Wednesday by Politico. Only 27 percent of voters said \u201ccancel culture\u201d had a positive impact on society, while 49 percent said it had a negative impact.<\/p>\n

The Senate majority leader spoke as Congress negotiates a new coronavirus pandemic relief package. He did not directly address developments in the talks.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
