Well, this gives new meaning to the term beach bums.<\/p>\n

A gang of disrespectful US fishermen are being chewed out online after they filmed themselves cruelly \u2014 and perhaps illegally \u2014 using a helpless shark to open a can of beer. They had originally posted footage of their heinous act to TikTok in May, but re-uploaded it to Youtube<\/a> this week, where sparked a fury among animal lovers, Kennedy News<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was just a bit of fun,\u201d West Virginia fisherman Wyatt Dallison cheekily told local media of the stunt, which he and buddy Cody Scott filmed after catching a sand tiger shark in Florida. <\/p>\n

In the appalling footage<\/a>, originally uploaded to hunting and fishing TikTok channel @outdoorchaos, a fisherman can be seen holding the critter\u2019s mouth open while his fellow jackanapes look on in amusement. Then, in a shocking move, one of the bozos decides to smash open a can of Busch Lite App<\/a>le on its teeth, whereupon it gets stuck in the shark\u2019s mouth, before falling out. <\/p>\n

The clip concludes with the abusive angler picking the beer off the sand and chugging it down it like an overgrown frat bro. <\/p>\n

The barbaric stunt sparked a veritable sharknado of backlash on TikTok with many labelling the act \u201cdisrespectful\u201d and \u201cabusive.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBro, the shark just got abused. He\u2019s trying to breathe,\u201d commented one distraught animal lover on TikTok. <\/p>\n

Another wrote, \u201cI love fishing but this is just disrespectful to the fish.\u201d<\/p>\n

One aghast shark fan added, \u201cSmacking its teeth with a can? Just catch, take pics, release, simple.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some even suggested that the chuckleheads had committed a crime. <\/p>\n

\u201cTaking a sand tiger out of the water. Illegal. Recorded yourself doing a crime. Brilliant.\u201d snarked one detractor, while another commenter claimed that their brother\u2019s friend \u201cgot fined $5,000\u201d for pulling a similar stunt. Indeed, Florida law dictates that protected shark species \u2013 such as a sand tiger shark \u2013 \u201cmust remain in the water with the gills submerged when fishing from shore or from a vessel,\u201d according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.<\/a><\/p>\n

In fact, Scott was reportedly approached by wildlife authorities after the video went viral.<\/p>\n

\u201cI got a warning from the game<\/a> warden after the video was taken,\u201d lamented the fisherman. \u201cI didn\u2019t know at the moment, but I do now so no more sharks will be taken out of the water by me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nonetheless, the social media clout-seeker claims that \u201cabsolutely no sharks were harmed in that video.\u201d<\/p>\n

His buddy Dallison, meanwhile, insists that the duo did nothing wrong. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt probably wasn\u2019t the greatest idea, but you know at the end of the day we did everything we could to make sure that shark was ok,\u201d he claimed. \u201cWe were trying to keep it in the wash so it still gets water in its gills, but people are allowed to think what they want.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, the National Marine Fisheries Service, who are responsible for the supervision of the US\u2019s ocean resources, maintains that it\u2019s imperative for anglers to adhere to submersion protocols.<\/p>\n

\u201cPracticing careful catch and release is important because it can drastically decrease the number of fish that die after being released,\u201d they said. \u201cGravity above the water\u2019s surface exerts great stress on the fish and lowers its chance of survival after release.<\/p>\n

In accordance, NMFS encourages \u201cpossible violations to be reported to the NOAA Office of Law Enforcement Hotline.\u201d<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the first time some TikTok anglers have been excoriated for abusing fish. This past June, fishermen sparked an online backlash for filming themselves \u201ctickling\u201d stingrays that they\u2019d caught.<\/p><\/div>\n
