{"id":323445,"date":"2021-08-13T22:18:06","date_gmt":"2021-08-13T19:18:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/china-cranks-up-carbon-intensive-projects-as-climate-crisis-grows\/"},"modified":"2021-08-13T22:18:06","modified_gmt":"2021-08-13T19:18:06","slug":"china-cranks-up-carbon-intensive-projects-as-climate-crisis-grows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/china-cranks-up-carbon-intensive-projects-as-climate-crisis-grows\/","title":{"rendered":"#China cranks up carbon-intensive projects as climate crisis grows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#China cranks up carbon-intensive projects as climate crisis grows<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n        <\/aside>\n<p>SHANGHAI \u2013\u00a0China\u00a0announced scores of new\u00a0carbon-intensive\u00a0coal and steel\u00a0projects\u00a0in the first half of 2021,\u00a0research\u00a0showed on Friday just days after a key U.N. report urged im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>te global action to curb use of fossil fuels and prevent runaway\u00a0climate\u00a0change.<\/p>\n<p>The push comes as\u00a0climate\u00a0experts exhort governments around the world to take drastic action amid increasingly widespread extreme weather events, like deadly wildfires, drought and even central\u00a0China\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/zhengzhou-floods-serve-chinas-urban-planners-deadly-warning-2021-07-23 -\">highest rainfall in 1,000 years <\/a>\u2013 events that experts say are directly linked to human impact on the environment via\u00a0carbon\u00a0emissions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rest of the world is getting the message that it\u2019s time to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/what-they-said-about-code-red-un-climate-science-report-2021-08-09\">move away from coal<\/a>, but coal interests in\u00a0China\u00a0are dragging their feet, and the central government is not reining them in,\u201d said Christine Shearer, coal program director at Global Energy Monitor (GEM), the U.S. think-tank that jointly authored the report on\u00a0China\u2019s first-half\u00a0carbon\u00a0projects\u00a0with the Helsinki-based Centre for\u00a0Research\u00a0on Energy and Clean Air (CREA).<\/p>\n<p>During the first half,\u00a0China, the world\u2019s biggest coal consumer and source of\u00a0climate-warming greenhouse gases, announced plans to build 18 new coal-fired blast furnaces, more than in the whole of last year, according to the CREA-GEM\u00a0research. Another 43 coal-fired power plant units were also proposed, the\u00a0research\u00a0showed.<\/p>\n<p>China\u00a0has promised to cut\u00a0carbon\u00a0emissions to net zero by 2060, but faces growing calls to set more ambitious targets and act faster.<\/p>\n<p>The United Nations\u2019 Intergovernmental Panel on\u00a0Climate\u00a0Change (IPCC) warned in a nearly 4,000-page report this week that\u00a0climate\u00a0change had \u201caffected every inhabited region across the globe\u201d and was in danger of spiraling out of control.<\/p>\n<p>U.N. Secretary-<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a> Antonio Guterres described the report as a \u201ccode red for humanity\u201d that should \u201csound a death knell for coal and fossil fuels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, according to the CREA-GEM study,\u00a0China\u00a0started construction on 15 gigawatts (GW) of new coal-fired power capacity in the first half.
