“#More Big Bads, Maggie’s Rage Against Negan & More<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

The war against the creepy Whisperers cult may finally be over, but AMC\u2019s zombie drama The Walking Dead<\/i><\/a> taught us a long time ago that lowering your guard is never a good idea. The series<\/a>-ending Season 11 (consisting of 24 episodes broken up into three intense installments that wrap in 2022) features multiple<\/i> postapocalyptic menaces for the survivors, according to showrunner Angela Kang<\/a>\u2014and some we\u2019ve already met.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a variety of big bads,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd characters\u2019 roles in things that go wrong are not always clear. That\u2019s something we\u2019ve been playing with, because villainy comes in many forms and isn\u2019t always black and white.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s especially true for Jeffrey Dean Morgan\u2019s<\/a> reformed Saviors leader Negan Smith. In the first episode back, he finds himself entangled even further with the recently returned Maggie Rhee (Lauren Cohan<\/a>), who can\u2019t quell her murderous rage toward him for killing Glenn (Steven Yeun<\/a>), her husband and father of baby Hershel, more than six years earlier.<\/p>\n

\u201cNegan wants Maggie to see how he\u2019s grown over this time she\u2019s been gone, but I think, in her mind, there\u2019s no redemption,\u201d Cohan explains over a Zoom chat with Morgan, who has just finished up afternoon labor on his New York farm. Morgan argues that the Season 10 finale (\u201cHere\u2019s Negan,\u201d which laid out the character\u2019s devastating backstory) proves that the former evildoer \u201cwasn\u2019t the worst<\/i> person in the world.\u201d He adds that Negan\u2019s \u201cdefinitely trying to make his case to be a part of the community.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the opener, the two must work together (e.g., killing walkers side by side, above) for the greater good: putting food on the table at the demolished Alexandria. After a supply run with less-than-desired results, Maggie suggests a crazy Plan B that is then derailed by a storm, forcing the gang into a zombie-infested Washington, D.C., subway tunnel. As if the mission weren\u2019t perilous enough, they also deal with the Reapers, the cold-blooded outfit that murdered Maggie\u2019s last group. \u201cIt\u2019s a fun, action-packed first episode,\u201d says Kang. The Reapers \u201chave some special skills, and they\u2019re very tight-knit.\u201d<\/p>\n

As to whether Negan and Maggie can put aside their differences long enough to get results, well, \u201cshe\u2019s going to try,\u201d teases Cohan. Meanwhile, more levelheaded survivors like crossbow-wielding Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus<\/a>) end up in tight spots too. \u201cDaryl has his own gigantic role in this story that is separate,\u201d notes Kang. In Episode 2, Daryl will be searching for his furry companion, Dog, and find more than he bargained for. Could that signal the imminent return of Connie (Lauren Ridloff<\/a>), who survived that messy cave-in during Season 10? We sure hope so.<\/p>\n

Daryl always has BFF Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride<\/a>) to lean on, though recently their friendship has been rocky. \u201cYou have to see these two join forces again, or the world should end,\u201d Reedus admits. \u201cI can\u2019t imagine [they wouldn\u2019t],\u201d McBride adds. (The two eventually depart on their own spinoff adventure in 2023.)<\/p>\n

But perhaps the biggest question ahead is what will happ<\/a>en with the group detained by those Stormtrooper-like soldiers? Pseudoscientist Eugene Porter (Josh McDermitt<\/a>)\u2014smitten with Stephanie (Margot Bingham<\/a>, now a series regular), the woman he conversed with over CB radio\u2014was captured by Commonwealth troops while trying to meet up. And he got his friends Ezekiel (Khary Payton<\/a>), Yumiko (Eleanor Matsuura<\/a>) and the newfound Princess (Paola L\u00e1zaro) involved too.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we pick up, they\u2019re being moved to another location for the next step in dealing with this group,\u201d Kang says. Look for new series regular Michael James Shaw (Blood & Treasure<\/i><\/a>) as Mercer, a fan fave from the comics, where he\u2019s illustrated as the brutal Commonwealth leader\u2014and Princess\u2019 love interest. (The Blacklist<\/i>\u2019s<\/a> Laila Robins<\/a> and 13 Reasons Why<\/i>\u2019s<\/a> Josh Hamilton are also joining the cast.) Is Mercer\u2019s infamous interrogation room their destination? Only time will tell. \u201cTheir story is more about intrigue: What is it like to run into a group that has very stringent ideas about how you bring people into their society?\u201d asks Kang. Maybe they should try Rick\u2019s foolproof three questions.<\/p>\n
