{"id":324279,"date":"2021-08-13T21:37:38","date_gmt":"2021-08-13T18:37:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/why-ethiopias-war-crisis-is-deepening-by-the-day\/"},"modified":"2021-08-13T21:37:38","modified_gmt":"2021-08-13T18:37:38","slug":"why-ethiopias-war-crisis-is-deepening-by-the-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/why-ethiopias-war-crisis-is-deepening-by-the-day\/","title":{"rendered":"#Why Ethiopia&#8217;s war crisis is deepening by the day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Why Ethiopia&#8217;s war crisis is deepening by the day<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n        <\/aside>\n<p>NAIROBI, Kenya \u2014 The United States says it is sending a special envoy to Ethiopia as the fast-moving\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/ethiopia-erasing-ethnicity\">conflict in the Tigray region<\/a>\u00a0has spread into neighboring regions and Ethiopia\u2019s government this week\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/africa-ethiopia-bd70724f2d03bd57b4f0111efc111a11\">called on all able citizens<\/a>\u00a0to stop the resurgent Tigray forces \u201conce and for all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The widening war in Africa\u2019s second-most populous country, with 110 million people, is also a growing humanitarian crisis. Millions of people in Tigray remain beyond the reach of food and other aid as the United Nations and U.S. say Ethiopian authorities allow just a small fraction of what\u2019s needed. This is a \u201ccritical moment,\u201d White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan tweeted. \u201cMonths of war have brought immense suffering and division to a great nation, that won\u2019t be healed through more fighting. We call on all parties to urgently come to the negotiating table.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>That seems highly unlikely. Ethiopia\u2019s government this year declared the Tigray People\u2019s Liberation Front, which dominated the government for nearly three decades before\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/race-and-ethnicity-eritrea-abiy-ahmed-ethiopia-nobel-prizes-cddcfc03a1b234fc3702cfc4486b0e74\">Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed<\/a>\u00a0took office in 2018, a terrorist group. The Tigray forces have set several preconditions for talks and say Abiy no longer has the legitimacy to govern. They retook much of the Tigray region in June in a dramatic turn in the war as Ethiopia\u2019s military retreated.<\/p>\n<p>What began as a political dispute has now killed thousands of people.<\/p>\n<p>Discussing what pressure the U.S. could apply to encourage negotiations, a congressional aide told The Associated Press that \u201cI understand all options are on the table, from Global Magnitsky (sanctions over human rights violations) to an executive order on sanctions, to removal from (the African Growth and Opportunity Act), to more restrictive measures on assistance,\u201d as well as ways to block Ethiopia\u2019s efforts to get cash from international financial institutions. The aide spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly on policy discussions.<\/p>\n<p>Officials and lawmakers in Washington have signaled impatience as Ethiopian officials deny widespread human rights abuses such as gang-rapes and forced expulsions of ethnic Tigrayans or blame the Tigray forces.<\/p>\n<p>The Ethiopian government\u2019s prickly dismissal of a new Amnesty International report on\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/africa-180f41945ae512e8170ca05b0cc65540\">shocking sexual violence<\/a>\u00a0against Tigrayan women during the war \u201creflects the tone-deafness with which the government is handling the multiple conflicts and humanitarian crises across the country,\u201d Senate Foreign Relations Committee ranking member Sen. It has been asserted that disproportionate attention is paid to the Tigray people and not enough is done to address alleged abuses by Tigray forces in the Amhara and Afar regions.<\/p>\n<p>The most urgent allegation was raised by the U.N. children\u2019s agency, which cited \u201ccredible information from partners\u201d about deadly attacks last week on a camp for newly displaced people in Afar. A U.N. team plans to assess the scene as soon as security allows, the agency said Thursday. Ethiopia\u2019s government has blamed the Tigray forces, whose spokesman Getachew Reda denied it but said they\u2019re willing to cooperate in an independent investigation.<\/p>\n<p>In the Amhara region, humanitarian groups are having trouble reaching their colleagues in Woldiya, one center of the fighting, amid a communications blackout. USAID has estimated that up to 900,000 people in Tigray face \u201cman-made\u201d famine conditions while phone, internet and banking services remain cut off.<\/p>\n<p>The U.N. World Food Program on Friday said at least 30 trucks a day must enter the region to address the need and what has arrived so far is a \u201cdrop in the ocean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Ethiopia\u2019s government has suspended the operations of two major international aid groups, the Dutch section of Doctors Without Borders and the Norwegian Refugee Council, accusing them of spreading \u201cmisinformation.\u201d This has further deterred many humanitarian workers from speaking openly, worried about retaliation. It also means efforts to respond to the crises in the Amhara and Afar regions could be affected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome humanitarian organizations may now alter their public messaging campaigns or self-censor to avoid facing suspension. This would further contribute to Ethiopia\u2019s closing civic space,\u201d the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies wrote on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>That means even less knowledge about conditions on the ground as many journalists face government-imposed restrictions, it said, adding that \u201ccivilians will suffer.\u201d\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
