{"id":324407,"date":"2021-08-14T17:24:38","date_gmt":"2021-08-14T14:24:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/9-11-memorial-excludes-first-responders-survivors-on-20th-anniversary\/"},"modified":"2021-08-14T17:24:38","modified_gmt":"2021-08-14T14:24:38","slug":"9-11-memorial-excludes-first-responders-survivors-on-20th-anniversary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/9-11-memorial-excludes-first-responders-survivors-on-20th-anniversary\/","title":{"rendered":"#9\/11 memorial excludes first responders, survivors on 20th anniversary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#9\/11 memorial excludes first responders, survivors on 20th anniversary<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n        <\/aside>\n<p>This memorial went from never forget to forget about the heroes of 9\/11.<\/p>\n<p>A ceremony next month to honor those killed  20 years ago on Sept. 11 will be limited to family members of the fallen, after organizers decided first responders, survivors and others wouldn\u2019t be invited to the milestone commemoration.<\/p>\n<p>The solemn gathering at the World Trade Center site\u00a0will serve as the city\u2019s featured memorial on a day that devastated New Yorkers and shook the nation.<\/p>\n<p>In years past, the reading of the names of 2,983 deceased has been attended by Presidents Bush and Obama, US senators, governors and other dignitaries.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Thousands have flocked to Ground Zero to pay homage on previous anniversaries, including firefighters, cops, EMS workers and other first responders, all joining family members in the audience.<\/p>\n<p>This year, the 9\/11 Memorial &amp; Museum sent the usual invitations to the relatives of the victims saying, \u201cThe ceremony will be exclusively for 9\/11 family members.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The invitations will serve as the \u201ccredential for admittance to the ceremony on the memorial plaza,\u201d the letters say, and attendees will cluster near the two memorial pools rimmed with the inscribed names of those who perished. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/9-11-5.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"From left, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Democratic presidential candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden, former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg, and Vice President Mike Pence stand during the national anthem at the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, in 2020.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">AP Photo\/John Minchillo<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>\u201c<\/strong>Only family members are invited,\u201d said memorial spokeswoman Lee Cochran. \u201cThe invited family members can bring as many additional family-member guests as they\u2019d like.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Cochran insisted that nothing is new year.<\/p>\n<p>But the rules have been selectively enforced.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Jim Riches, a retired firefighter whose firefighter son, Jimmy, was killed in the attacks,\u00a0 has attended every 9\/11 ceremony and said many first-responders were admitted without passes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey turn a blind eye and let them in,\u201d he said. \u201cI know some in full uniform have gotten in and also seen others turned away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sally Regenhard, whose firefighter son, Christian, was killed on 9\/11, said\u00a0responders and survivors should all be welcomed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that 9\/11 h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ened to a lot of people, and we can\u2019t forget the survivors. It didn\u2019t happen exclusively to people who were massacred on that day. It profoundly affected other people, who were physically or emotionally injured,\u201d Regenhard said.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cPeople in the uniformed services consider the people they work with as brothers and sisters \u2014 they\u2019re a family. They should make an effort to have every single first responder who would like to attend, go. It should be open to all of them, especially those who answered the call of duty on 9\/11,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Tim Frolich, a Fuji Bank employee whose foot was crushed while escaping the dust cloud when the South Tower collapsed, credits two Port Authority cops and a firefighter with bringing him to safety.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/9-11-3.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"Sally Regenhard who lost her son Christian Michael Otto Regenhard\" class=\"wp-image-19131383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/9-11-3.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/9-11-3.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/9-11-3.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Sally Regenhard thinks all first responders should be welcome at the memorial.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Paul Martinka<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He believes such heroes should be invited to the 9\/11 ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cThey\u2019re the people we turned to in a moment of sheer chaos to help us,\u201d Frolich said.<\/p>\n<p>Frank Siller, CEO of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, whose firefighter brother, Stephen Siller, was killed on 9\/11, said first-responders and survivors should not be turned away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust because it\u2019s 20 years later doesn\u2019t mean you\u2018re completely healed,\u201d he said. \u201cThey want to pay their respects and honor their heroes. Charles Schumer and Hillary Clinton; and actor Robert De Niro. Relatives of those lost also took part in the readings.<\/p>\n<p>George Pataki, then New York governor, recited the Gettysburg Address. Bush arrived several hours later to lay a wreath at the site.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony has continued every year since, with children of the deceased reading the names on one occasion and parents and grandparents on another. The names include those killed in the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center.<\/p>\n<p>Moments of silence mark when a plane hit each of the Twin Towers, the Pentagon and a field in Shanksville, PA, and when each tower fell.<\/p>\n<p>The event has not been without controversy.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/9-11-4.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"Law enforcement official 9\/11 memorial\" class=\"wp-image-19131359\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/9-11-4.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/9-11-4.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/9-11-4.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Thousands have flocked to Ground Zero to pay homage on previous anniversaries, including firefighters, cops, EMS workers.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Andrew Burton\/Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When the memorial opened in 2011 for the 10th anniversary of the attack, the city said there was no room for firefighters, cops and others at the ceremony attended by Bush and Obama.<\/p>\n<p>Some firefighters fumed in 2016, the 15th anniversary, when they were barred from the ceremony while politicians got in.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>\u201cWhat family member did Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump lose that they were allowed in?\u201d one of the first responders, EMT Terry Canham, griped that year. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The pandemic scuttled the tradition last year, when memorial officials, bowing to COVID-19 concerns, decided they would not bring together anyone to read the names, using a pre-recorded recitation instead.<\/p>\n<p>That led the Tunnel to Towers Foundation to hold its own ceremony a short distance away with live readings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not something we wanted to do. It\u2019s something we had to do,\u201d Siller told The Post at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Another furor erupted when the 9\/11 memorial said it was also cancelling its annual Tribute in Light to protect workers from COVID while setting up the display of twin blue beams over the WTC site. <\/p>\n<p>The outcry led the foundation to reverse course. This Sept. 11, the lights are expected to shine at sunset, and fade away at dawn on Sept. 12.<\/p>\n<p>The 9\/11 ceremony is set to start at 8:30 am and conclude at 1 pm.
