George Pataki.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s certainly possible he runs again,\u201d Pataki, 76, told The Post by phone from his home in Garrison, New York. \u201cI hope he has the good sense not to do it, but Anthony Weiner came back and ran for mayor.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pataki said he was pleased to see Cuomo step aside \u2014 but saw more than just contrition in the governor\u2019s announcement that he was leaving office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeeing his resignation statement, it almost looked as though he was trying to position himself,\u201d said Pataki, who added it seemed like Cuomo was hoping \u201cthat the people would forget and he would run again. I certainly hope the people don\u2019t forget.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie announced he would end the chamber\u2019s impeachment probe into the 63-year-old Cuomo. His campaign committee <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.democratandchronicle.com\/story\/news\/politics\/albany\/2021\/07\/15\/cuomo-campaign-fundraising-reelection-scandals\/7985996002\/\">reported more than $18 million<\/a> in the bank as of last month.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no reason that he couldn\u2019t, if he wanted to run for governor in 2022. There would be at least a few other folks in the race. You won\u2019t need 51 percent to win, and he has by far the greatest name ID of anyone,\u201d said Chris Coffey, a longtime city Democratic operative. \u201cThere\u2019s no reason to think he couldn\u2019t run and potentially win.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Pataki urged the state legislature to pass a resolution to formally shut down any possible return for Cuomo.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI believe the Senate has the power to preclude his ability to run again and if that\u2019s the case I would urge them to pass that resolution,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>Pataki, the last Republican governor of the Empire State, served three relatively quiet terms between 1995 and 2006.
