mimicking somebody, especially somebody like Aretha.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Hudson got some help from vocal coach Tom Jones \u2014 her former fellow judge on \u201cThe Voice UK\u201d \u2014 in finding Franklin\u2019s voice while not losing her own. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe resolve was to show her influence on me and pay homage to certain nuances, like the way she shaped her mouth when she sang,\u201d And J-Hud deserves her propers for the way she handles Franklin\u2019s signature song. She strikes a fine balance between imitation and interpretation, while capturing the feisty, sock-it-to-\u2019em essence of Franklin\u2019s vocal for the ages.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"block-cefa5189-5428-429f-93bc-5c7015892853\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CI_Never_Loved_a_Man_The_Way_I_Love_You%E2%80%9D\"><\/span><strong>\u201cI Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)\u201d<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"block-dab8dcf2-0e56-479c-9cd4-c8dda7d09b50\">Hudson gets inside the soul of this gospel-powered testimony, but her voice seems thin compared to Franklin\u2019s husky heft, especially when it calls for that primal growl. On songs like this, Hudson almost sounds like a mash-up of Franklin and \u201950s singer Dinah Washington, an early Franklin mentor played by a scene-stealing Mary J. She nails the gospel part, but she\u2019s not a natural blues woman. And she sounds as if she\u2019s trying too hard with that overdone run at the end.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CAmazing_Grace%E2%80%9D\"><\/span><strong>\u201cAmazing Grace\u201d<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Franklin delivered the definitive performance of this hymn when she sang it as the title tune of her 1972 live gospel album. It\u2019s simply one of the greatest vocal performances ever. And while no one could ever out-Aretha Aretha, Hudson does justice to the Queen here.
