Listened to his mentor during draft prep, Penny Hardaway. Heard from his NHL-playing brother, Tyler. Heeded advice from Knicks executive Allan Houston. And continues to lean on former Knick Reggie Bullock.<\/p>\n<p>After another quiet first half on offense in which he stayed mostly in the corner awaiting passes that never came, Grimes scored 10 of his 15 summer-league high points in the second half of Friday night\u2019s loss to the Pistons. He started to create. He finished 6-of-10 from the field, 3-of-6 from 3. He also had two blocks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m starting to get real comfortable,\u2019\u2019 Grimes said late Friday night. \u201cThe first two <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>s, I didn\u2019t shoot it the way I can. But I hung my hat on defense and rebounding and making plays. Allan Houston told me keep shooting, they\u2019re going to fall. Penny texted me and said you\u2019re a shooter, keep shooting. That\u2019s what you do. Grimes faked a back pass to Immanuel Quickley, then fed inside to center Wayne Seldon, who missed the layup but was fouled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had to be more aggressive and assertive when defenses collapse on me and make the right play, trying to get my teammates into the game,\u2019\u2019 Grimes told The Post. \u201cI\u2019m leaning the system every game. [Summer-league coach Dice Yoshimoto] is running the same system as Thibs [Tom Thibodeau]. Just getting more comfortable what we\u2019re doing out there.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Grimes thought he\u2019d have Bullock as his teammate, but the Knicks starting shooting guard of 2020-21 signed with Dallas. They share the same agent, David Bauman, and the players still are in touch.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>\u201cReggie told me Thibs loves shooters and loves defense,\u2019\u2019 Grimes said. \u201cThat\u2019s the two things I do. He\u2019s giving me advice about defense and my new city, really helping me as much as possible.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Through four games, Grimes averaged 9.5 points and 6.5 rebounds, shooting 35 percent but a decent 35.7 percent form 3.<\/p>\n<p>In the first three games, Grimes took just 10 shots per game while averaging 35 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Sampson told The Post earlier this week that \u201cit\u2019s OK to be a little selfish in summer league\u2019\u2019, noting Grimes is playing alongside Quickley, who is \u201ca shoot-first, shoot-second, shoot-third point guard.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Sampson says he thought Grimes, who led Houston to The Final Four in March, had \u201cbutterflies\u2019\u2019 in the summer-league opener and will be just fine.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1000\" height=\"743\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/1334056769-e1628978524100.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1000\" alt=\"Quentin Grimes guards No. 1 pick Cade Cunningham.\" class=\"wp-image-19134683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/1334056769-e1628978524100.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1000w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/1334056769-e1628978524100.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=500 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\"\/><figcaption>Quentin Grimes guards No. 1 pick Cade Cunningham.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a reason he\u2019s a first-round draft choice,\u2019\u2019 Sampson said. \u201cHe\u2019ll improve. Quentin is going to be a good player.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Though Houston and Memphis are college rivals, Hardaway, the Tigers\u2019 coach, worked out Grimes in the lead-up to the draft.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knows I\u2019m a shooter \u2014 I played against Memphis three times,\u2019\u2019 Grimes said. \u201c[Hardaway] said keep shooting and they\u2019re going to go in like they did today [Friday]. And he feels I can use my point-guard skills and play on the ball. Penny sees the game and he sees how to play for yourself and your teammates.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Grimes transferred from Kansas to Houston after one rocky season after being one of the hottest high-school recruits in 2018. He was projected as a one-and-done, but he needed two more seasons at Houston rebuilding his image.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCredit to him,\u2019\u2019 Sampson said. \u201cHe struggled his first year, found his footing his second year and knocked the door down in his third.
