\n She\u2019s smart, beautiful \u2014 and pursuing an arranged marriage.<\/p>\n

\u201cI always get, \u2018You\u2019re so pretty, how are you still single? Why are you still single?\u2019 It\u2019s not me! Maybe it is,\u201d Nadia Christina Jagessar says in the first episode of Netflix\u2019s new reality TV hit, \u201cIndian Matchmaking.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 32-year-old from Morris Plains, NJ, has become a fan favorite after the show debuted Thursday, although many viewers were confused as to why the fragrance marketer and event planner needed to turn to a matchmaker to find love in the first place.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was on the app<\/a>s, and I wasn\u2019t finding anyone interesting or that I clicked with. My cousins tried to set me up. Nothing was really working,\u201d Jagessar, who has been single for six years, told The Post of dating in the New York City area.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to start this next phase of my life. I have my career. I have my friends and family. I have my hobbies, I have all these other things in my life that are in place and that I\u2019m working towards, and I felt like there was no traction or movement in the relationship or love department.\u201d<\/p>\n

The binge-worthy show, which was filmed in 2019, follows \u201cAuntie\u201d Sima Taparia, a top matchmaker from Mumbai, India, as she travel<\/a>s around India and the US pairing singles for arranged marriages.<\/p>\n

Jagessar \u2014 whose motto is, \u201cI\u2019ll try anything once\u201d \u2014 was familiar with arranged marriages. Many of her relatives, including her parents, met that way. When she heard the show was casting and she would be set up with Taparia, Jagessar had to give it a try: \u201cI have nothing to lose. I am looking for [love], and maybe this is the way,\u201d she remembers thinking. (She did not have to pay for Taparia\u2019s services, which included her traveling from India to New Jersey for in-person meetings.)<\/p>\n

\u201cI was like, \u2018Is this going to be like a \u201cMarried At First Sight\u201d type of deal?\u2019 \u201d Jagessar said, referring to the popular TV show where couples first meet at the marriage altar. \u201c[Taparia] assured me that I have the choice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although Jagessar has Indian heritage, her family is from Guyana, and many of her past dates have struggled to appreciate that aspect of her life. \u201cWhen I was out, I\u2019d be like, \u2018That guy is hot.\u2019 But is he going to want to understand me? Is he going to want to learn about my culture?\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Jagessar hoped that the men Taparia would introduce her to would be \u201cmore serious\u201d than those she met on the apps. The matchmaker would compile \u201cbio-data\u201d on each potential suitor, a r\u00e9sum\u00e9 of sorts describing each one\u2019s job, personality and family life, which was a game<\/a>-changer for Jagessar.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt takes a lot to even have a conversation about someone\u2019s family. And that\u2019s not something you learn about on Minute One after meeting someone,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She thought she had met her match when she was paired with Vinay Chadha. \u201cI thought it was going great. We had hung out so many times. He told me he liked me, I had met his friends,\u201d said Jagessar. And so fans were heartbroken watching Chadha stand his date up twice, once when he was about to meet the event planner\u2019s friends for the first time.<\/p>\n

On Instagram, Chadha sang a different tune. In a post, he claimed that the scene in which he stood up Jagessar and her friends was scripted \u2014 and that she was the one who ghosted him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have some messages where I said I don\u2019t wish to pursue anything further, and he did keep reaching out and I ignored him. So if he considers that ghosting, that\u2019s fine,\u201d she said of the claims. \u201cDon\u2019t be mad at me. I am not the producer or the person who created the show. I am a piece of this puzzle, just as you were.\u201d<\/p>\n

Viewers last saw Jagessar in Chicago with potential match Shekar. After filming, the two continued to see each other and even went on a trip together. But it didn\u2019t work out. \u201c\u2018The stars are not aligned,\u2019 as Sima Auntie says,\u201d Jagessar said.<\/p>\n

Jagessar is currently single. \u201cWhen I feel ready, maybe I\u2019ll be calling Sima again, who knows? But right now I just kind of want to do my thing,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

In the meantime, her DMs are open, and she\u2019s slowly making her way through every message sent her way.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything has been such an outpouring of love and support,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s been extremely overwhelming.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
