Cynthia Erivo<\/strong> is set to star in\u00a0The Talent Show<\/em><\/strong>, a musical drama written by\u00a0Lena Waithe<\/strong>. The film follows a failed singer who returns to her hometown and ends up leading a group of\u00a0at-risk youth in their annual talent show. So think of it as\u00a0The Way Back<\/em>, but with singing instead of basketball. And less beer (probably).\u00a0Gandja Monteiro<\/strong> (The Chi<\/em>) is set to direct.<\/p>\n

According to THR, the multi-talented Cynthia Ervio has a leading role lined-up with\u00a0The Talent Show<\/em>. The film \u201cis the story of a failed songwriter, to be played by Erivo, who returns home to Chicago to lead a group of at-risk youth in their annual talent show.\u201d This is a tried and true storyline, although it usually app<\/a>lies to movies<\/a> about sports \u2013 see\u00a0Hoosiers<\/em>,\u00a0The Way Back<\/em>, and so on. The formula is the same: someone who failed at their dreams gets a shot at redemption by inspiring the next generation.<\/p>\n

While this isn\u2019t the most original story, Ervio is crazy talented, both a great actress and a great singer. Plus, the script comes from\u00a0Lena Waithe, a highly-praised creator, and writer of various titles. That might be enough talent to get this some sort of awards season buzz, whenever it arrives. Which probably won\u2019t be for a while, because THR adds that the project currently has no start date.<\/p>\n

While Waithe wrote the most recent version of the script, the idea hails from\u00a0Duane Adler, writer of\u00a0Save the Last Dance<\/em>\u00a0and the creator of the\u00a0Step Up<\/em>\u00a0franchise. The project is set up at Universal, and\u00a0senior executive vice president of production Erik Baiers and senior vice president of production Sara Scott are overseeing the film.\u00a0George Tillman Jr. and Robert Teitel, who worked on\u00a0The Hate U Give,<\/em>\u00a0will produce for their State Street Pictures. Waithe will executive produce with State Street\u2019s Jay Marcus.\u00a0Gandja Monteiro will direct.<\/p>\n

Erivo was last seen in the film\u00a0Harriet<\/em> and the HBO series\u00a0The Outsider<\/em>. She\u2019s next set to appear in the long-delayed Doug Liman sci-fi film\u00a0Chaos Walking<\/em>, due out next year.<\/p>\n
