Rather than focusing on the money, FSR senior editor\u00a0Christopher Campbell is more interested in the estimated attendance \u2014 or number of tickets sold. Because the value of money changes over the years, but the value of actual moviegoers remains the same. This week, we look at the opening box office attendance numbers for Free Guy, Don\u2019t Breathe 2, and Respect.&lt;\/em&gt;\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<hr\/>\n<p><strong>Ryan Reynolds\u00a0<\/strong>is finally a real, live movie star! It\u2019s only taken him around twenty years. Blue fairy has come through and turned the funny boy into a genuine box office draw. He doesn\u2019t need the Deadpool suit or the Green Lantern ring or Denzel Washington or Sandra Bullock leading the way. Like his titular character in <strong><em>Free Guy<\/em><\/strong>, Reynolds has now shown his full potential.<\/p>\n<p><em>Free Guy<\/em>, an original-enough idea not supported by any exact existing IP,\u00a0 grossed $28.4 million (estimated*) in its first few days, which is about 3.1 million tickets sold**. That\u2019s much better than the 1.1 million tickets debut of his action-comedy sequel <em>Hitman\u2019s Bodyguard\u2019s Wife<\/em> earlier this year. In fact, it\u2019s even better than last weekend\u2019s box office champ, the DC superhero movie <em>The Suicide Squad<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Free Guy<\/em> gave the actor one of his best openings ever. Not bad considering how many comic book characters Reynolds has played over the years. For the most part. Last week, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.boxofficepro.com\/weekend-box-office-forecast-free-guy-dont-breathe-2-and-respect\/\">Box Office Pro predicted<\/a> <em>Free Guy<\/em> would only make as much as about 2.2 million tickets. With a peak possible crowd number of about 2.7 million. However, in mid-July, before pandemic fears were back on the rise, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.boxofficepro.com\/long-range-box-office-forecast-what-to-expect-from-the-suicide-squad-and-summers-remaining-slate\/\">Box Office Pro\u2019s too-wide range of potential<\/a> was equivalent to anywhere between 1.6 million and 3.8 million tickets sold.<\/p>\n<p>Even then, the reality wound up on the higher side of expectations. Part of its success could have been its theatrical exclusivity. <em>Free Guy<\/em> isn\u2019t streaming anywhere for a while. Also, its reviews were surprisingly positive (82% <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/free_guy\">on Rotten Tomatoes<\/a>, 62 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/movie\/free-guy\">on Metacritic<\/a>). <em>Free Guy<\/em> is actually <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/celebrity\/ryan_reynolds\">Reynolds\u2019 third-best-reviewed wide release<\/a> (and sixth-best overall). And its audience reception (95% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes) was great, as well. First-night moviegoers gave <em>Free Guy<\/em> an \u2018A\u2019 grade <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cinemascore.com\/\">via Cinemascore polling<\/a>. Like <em>Free Guy<\/em>, <em><strong>Don\u2019t Breathe 2<\/strong><\/em> exceeded box office expectations. The horror sequel grossed $10.6 million, equal to around 1.2 million tickets. That\u2019s better than Box Office Pro\u2019s forecast last week of less than a million people. However, last month, the site gave 1.2 million as the movie\u2019s lowest possible attendance. The original <em>Don\u2019t Breathe <\/em>sold around 2.9 million tickets five years ago with a smaller budget.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, <em>Don\u2019t Breathe 2<\/em> received much worse reviews (51% <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/dont_breathe_2\">on Rotten Tomatoes<\/a>, 48 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/movie\/dont-breathe-2\">on Metacritic<\/a>) than <em>Don\u2019t Breathe<\/em> (88% <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/dont_breathe_2016\">on Rotten Tomatoes<\/a>, 71 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/movie\/dont-breathe\">on Metacritic<\/a>), which opened in first place five years ago. And much of its negative reception has included outright dis<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roval for its reassessment of a rapist as a hero. For some reason, Cinemascore didn\u2019t poll <em>Don\u2019t Breathe 2<\/em> ticket buyers on Friday night, but the movie\u2019s audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is actually currently higher than that of its predecessor.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Respect_Box_Office\"><\/span>Respect Box Office<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>That release was also a theatrical exclusive, as was the third big opener of the past weekend: <em><strong>Respect<\/strong><\/em>. The entertaining biographical portrayal of the life of Aretha Franklin grossed $8.8 million. That\u2019s about 960,000 people who went to see Jennifer Hudson in the role of the Queen of Soul. Low for a music icon\u2019s life story, but we also shouldn\u2019t really compare it to anything in pre-pandemic times.<\/p>\n<p>And it, too, was higher than the forecast figure. Last week, Box Office Pro guessed the musical biopic would draw about 870,000 people. Yet the site did offer a high-end for potential as being 1.1 million. Last month, that potential topped at almost 2 million. Reviews for <em>Respect<\/em> were modest (63% <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/respect_2021\">on Rotten Tomatoes<\/a>, 63 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/movie\/respect\">on Metacritic<\/a>), while the Cinemascore grade was exceptional (though typical for a music biopic): \u2018A.\u2019<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Rest\"><\/span>The Rest<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In other new release box office <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>, <em><strong>The Lost Leonardo<\/strong><\/em> opened on just three screens over the weekend and managed the second-best per-theater average: 1,063 tickets (<em>Free Guy<\/em> had the best with\u00a0 1,646). The documentary, which premiered earlier this year at the Tribeca Film Festival, concerns the mystery of a work that may or may not have been painted by Leonardo Da Vinci.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, this past weekend\u2019s box office attendance was up from last weekend\u2019s disappointment. About 8.2 million Americans bought movie tickets compared to the previous week\u2019s 7.1 million.
