The cable, called Project Apricot, is expected to launch in 2024 and will help deliver better 4G, 5G and broadband internet to the region, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/engineering.fb.com\/2021\/08\/15\/connectivity\/apricot-subsea-cable\/\">according<\/a> to Facebook.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That project compliments another undersea cable connecting Singapore, Indonesia and North America that Facebook and Google first <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/engineering.fb.com\/2021\/03\/28\/connectivity\/echo-bifrost\/\">unveiled<\/a> together this March in collaboration with several Asian telecom companies.<\/p>\n<p>The tech giants have not disclosed how much money they are spending on such projects \u2014 which provide the crucial and under-<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>reciated backbone of the internet \u2014 but the cables have the potential to bring internet access to millions of new customers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In Indonesia, some 27 percent of the country\u2019s population \u2014 or about 73 million people \u2014 have no internet access, and most Indonesians who do go online do so through spotty mobile connections, the Jakarta Post <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thejakartapost.com\/news\/2020\/11\/11\/indonesian-internet-users-hit-196-million-still-concentrated-in-java-apjii-survey.html\">reported<\/a> last year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/subsea-cables-23.jpeg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"Cables\" class=\"wp-image-19143017\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/subsea-cables-23.jpeg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/subsea-cables-23.jpeg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/subsea-cables-23.jpeg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Undersea cables provide the crucial and under-appreciated backbone of the internet. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Mark Malijan<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>More than three-quarters of Indonesians who have internet access use Facebook, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/napoleoncat.com\/stats\/facebook-users-in-indonesia\/2020\/01\/\">according<\/a> to social media analytics company NapoleonCat, meaning that bringing the rest of the country online would presumably net Mark Zuckerberg\u2019s company tens of millions of new users.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Facebook also said Monday it is expanding an already announced 23,000-mile <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/engineering.fb.com\/2020\/05\/13\/connectivity\/2africa\/\">undersea cable project<\/a> circling the entire continent of Africa and connecting to Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The cable, called 2Africa, was designed to link 26 countries including Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Just 40 percent of people in the continent of 1.2 billion people have internet access, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfr.org\/blog\/last-month-over-half-billion-africans-accessed-internet\">according<\/a> to the Council on Foreign Relations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a 2016 attempt to bring internet to Africa, Facebook created a $200 million satellite that was designed to beam down internet to the continent. The company hired SpaceX to launch the satellite \u2014 but the rocket blew up on the launchpad in a massive fireball.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Even if undersea cables are less sexy than rockets, Facebook and Google seem to have decided they are more reliable.
