But Kardashian took to Instagram Wednesday to explain West\u2019s behavior and ask their fans and foes for understanding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs many of you know, Kanye has [bipolar] disorder,\u201d she wrote of her husband\u2019s meltdown. \u201cThose who are close with Kanye know his heart and understand his words [sometimes] do not align with his intentions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The newly minted billionaire and mom of four asked for \u201ccompassion and empathy .\u2009.\u2009. so that we can get through this\u201d in her statement after what has been a roller coaster week for the West family.<\/p>\n<p>West\u2019s erratic behavior is part and parcel to the mental health disorder which, according to the American Psychiatric Association, can bring on \u201cextreme and intense emotional states\u201d and can include \u201crisky behavior\u201d and irritability.<\/p>\n<p>How did the 21-time Grammy winner get here? Here\u2019s a look into the disorder and its effect on West over the years.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_bipolar_disorder\"><\/span><strong>What is bipolar disorder?\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Bipolar disorder \u2014 type I, II or more mild cyclothymia \u2014 is defined by \u201cdramatic shifts in a person\u2019s mood, energy and ability to think clearly,\u201d according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness. The 4.4% of Americans with bipolar disorder experience alternating periods of mania and depression that can each last months.<\/p>\n<p>Manic moods, characterized by a euphoric but outsized sense of self-confidence, can lead to erratic behavior \u2014 anything from \u201cjumping from one idea to another,\u201d to \u201cirritability,\u201d to spending sprees to \u201csexual liaisons,\u201d Dr. Lloyd Sederer, chief medical officer at the New York State Office of Mental Health recently told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever form the mania takes, one thing remains true: Every episode raises the patient\u2019s odds of having another. \u201cIt\u2019s the kindling theory,\u201d Sederer explained. \u201cThere\u2019s been more wood added to the fire, so it\u2019s easier for the fire to be ignited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An \u201cexaggerated, puffed-up self-esteem\u201d is a feature of bipolar disorder, according to Harvard Medical School, one mirrored by the artist\u2019s tracks \u201cI Am A God\u201d from the 2013 \u201cYeezus\u201d album, and grandiose statements such as, \u201cI\u2019m the greatest human artist of all time.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_going_on_with_Kanye_lately\"><\/span>What\u2019s going on with Kanye lately?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16022326\"><img alt=\"Kim and Kanye.\" data- data- height=\"441\" width=\"662\"><\/img><figcaption><span>Kim and Kanye.<\/span><span>Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Signs of familial trouble came following his announcement on the 4th of July 2020 that he\u2019d be running for president, and at a presidential campaign rally in North Charleston, South Carolina Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Sporting a bulletproof vest and with \u201c2020\u201d shaved into his hair, the rapper gave an emotional and, at times, hysterical speech. \u201cI almost killed my daughter,\u201d yelled West as security guards looked on with concern, describing how he and then-girlfriend Kim debated an abortion.<\/p>\n<p>Then, in a few brief but bizarre Twitter rants \u2014 most of which have been deleted \u2014 West claimed his family sent two doctors to his ranch in Cody, Wyoming, to \u201c51\/50\u201d him, referring to an involuntary psychiatric hospitalization \u201cof up to 72 hours for assessment, evaluation and crisis intervention,\u201d according to California law.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cGraduation\u201d hit-maker added that he\u2019s been \u201ctrying to get divorce\u201d since \u201cKim met Meek at the Waldorf for \u2018prison reform,\u2019 \u201d referring to a 2018 summit on criminal justice reform the two attended. He also accused the Kardashian-Jenner clan of \u201cwhite supremacy\u201d and referred to his mother-in-law as \u201cKris Jung-Un.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_could_have_triggered_Kanyes_recent_mania\"><\/span>What could have triggered Kanye\u2019s recent mania?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cPeriods of high stress, such as the death of a loved one or other traumatic event,\u201d is a risk factor, according to Mayo Clinic.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors emphasize that many stressors and factors, known and unknown, can lead to a manic episode. Some have speculated that his recent episode could have been brought on by the birthday of his late mother Donda, who would have been 71 on July 12. She died in 2007 while undergoing plastic surgery.<\/p>\n<p>Kim alluded in her statement to Kanye\u2019s \u201cpainful loss of his mother.\u201d The rapper\u2019s upcoming album is named for his mom. \u201cDONDA: WITH CHILD new album and movie this Friday,\u201d wrote \u201cYe\u201d on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>The stresses of the pandemic \u2014 which reportedly has the couple \u201cat each other\u2019s throats,\u201d according to Page Six \u2014 may also be a factor, some speculate.<\/p>\n<p>According to a source close to the rapper, West is prone to working as many as 48 hours at a time, a possible sign of a manic state. Recently, West signed a 10-year contract with Gap for a new line \u2014 but then threatened to pull out of the deal. He\u2019s also producing an album, overseeing construction of shell-like enclosures as part of his \u201cFTR\u201d project\u00a0and running for president.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoing many activities at once [and] scheduling more events in a day than can be accomplished\u201d is a sign of manic behavior according to the American Psychiatric Association.<\/p>\n<p>According to Harvard Medical School, \u201cFalse beliefs or false perceptions\u201d can be a sign of bipolarism. That could explain some of the misinformation that West has been sharing lately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarriet Tubman never actually freed the slaves,\u201d posited West at his campaign rally, echoing his other eyebrow-raising convictions including that slavery was \u201ca choice.\u201d He also recently claimed disgraced comedian Bill Cosby was \u201clocked up\u201d by NBC. Earlier this month he told a Forbes reporter that vaccines are \u201cthe mark of the beast.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wests_mental_health_history\"><\/span><strong>West\u2019s mental health history<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16022306\"><img alt=\"2009's VMAs\" data- data- height=\"441\" width=\"662\"><\/img><figcaption><span>2009\u2019s VMAs<\/span><span>FilmMagic<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>West has exhibited similarly erratic behavior before, such as his 2009 VMAs interruption of Taylor Swift. He also had to cancel the remainder of his \u201cSaint Pablo Tour\u201d dates in November 2016 after a shortened concert left audiences enraged. An \u201cexhausted\u201d West was later hospitalized.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, the album art for West\u2019s eighth record \u201cYe\u201d included the phrase, \u201cI hate being \/ Bi-Polar \/ it\u2019s awesome\u201d over an iPhone picture of the Wyoming mountain range. West also referred to the disorder as \u201cmy superpower\u201d on the album.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, West has been more open about his struggles and has become more of an advocate for erasing the stigma around mental illness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2009\u2018Crazy\u2019 is a word that\u2019s not gonna be used loosely in the future,\u201d West told Forbes in 2019.\u00a0\u201cUnderstand that this is actually a condition that people can end up in, be born into, driven into and go in and out. And there\u2019s a lot of people that have been called that \u2018C\u2019 word that have ended up on this cover,\u201d he said, referring to Forbes.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with David Letterman, West himself detailed his experiences with the disorder, saying that for him everything can feel like \u201ca conspiracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou feel the government is putting chips in your head,\u201d he told Letterman, adding that he only got his diagnosis two years prior to their 2019 interview. \u201cYou feel you\u2019re being recorded. You feel all these things.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Treatment_for_bipolar_disorder\"><\/span>Treatment for bipolar disorder<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The disorder is often treated with behavioral therapy and antipsychotic medications.
