The filmmaker only agreed to direct an adaptation of\u00a0<strong>Frank Herbert<\/strong>\u2018s seminal <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a>-fiction novel if producers allowed him to split the book into two films. The studio agreed, so the upcoming\u00a0<em>Dune<\/em> is only the first part of a planned <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> \u2026 and the second film could change up who\u2019s driving the action.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.repubblica.it\/venerdi\/2021\/08\/13\/news\/dune_mostra_venezia_timothe_e_chalamet_denis_villeneuve_zendaya-313479211\/\">La Repubblica<\/a> (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/dune-part-2-zendaya-lead-character-in-sequel\">translated by IGN<\/a>), Villeneuve said that\u00a0<strong>Zendaya<\/strong> will be the primary protagonist in the sequel.\u00a0<strong>Timothy Chalamet<\/strong><em>\u2018<\/em>s character\u00a0Paul Atreides\u00a0is the lead of part one.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Casting_Chani\"><\/span>Casting Chani<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post -->In\u00a0<em>Dune<\/em>, the noble House Atreides gains possession of the desert planet Arrakis. The planet is home to one of the universe\u2019s most valuable resources, a drug called spice that gives users heightened abilities. Controlling Arrakis means controlling the spice trade, which makes the Atreides family a target of the evil House Harkonnen. Zendaya will play Chani, a member of the Arrakis tribe known as Fremen, who ally with Paul.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I did the casting for Chani\u2019s character, I met a lot of actresses,\u201d Villeneuve told La Repubblica:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cZendaya wanted to audition and today, after shooting the film and seeing what a wonderful actress she is, I\u2019m sorry I auditioned her. It was just because I didn\u2019t know her. However that day, she impressed me and when she left the studio I knew that Chani was her, the young desert tiger. I am honored to present two such explosive talents on screen [Chalamet and Zendaya] and I can\u2019t wait to shoot the second part of Dune to get them back together. Knowing that in the next chapter Zendaya will be the protagonist of the story.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Zendaya is an incredible talent. Her work on the HBO drama\u00a0<strong><em>Euphoria<\/em><\/strong> showed that the former Disney Channel star is capable of so much more, and now she\u2019s going to get the chance to lead a huge sci-fi franchise entry. As long as the first part of\u00a0<em>Dune<\/em> does well enough to ensure the second half gets made, of course.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s possible that Villeneuve doesn\u2019t mean she\u2019ll <em>literally<\/em> play the lead (it\u2019s not like\u00a0Chalamet<em>\u2018<\/em>s Paul vanishes from the story), as this <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> does come via translation, but a fan can hope. I wanted everyday light, not perfect sunsets or sunrises. I wanted it to be accessible and understandable. Only then would viewers focus on the characters and their relationships without being distracted from the frames of the film. So I gave space to nature for what it is, without trying to control or modify it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>That\u2019s a pretty big departure from the previous film adaptation of\u00a0<em>Dune<\/em>, directed by\u00a0David Lynch. Lynch\u2019s vision was pure fantasy, so it\u2019s interesting that Villeneuve has a more grounded take.<\/p>\n<p><em>Dune<\/em> will world premiere\u00a0<strong>September 3, 2021<\/strong> out of competition at the Venice Film Festival.
