it?<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>#Qualcomm&#8217;s Snapdragon Insiders phone is full of baffling choices<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>I\u2019m not really sure how to review Qualcomm and Asus\u2018s \u2018Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders\u2018. It is one of the most puzzling devices I\u2019ve tested, not because there\u2019s much wrong with the phone per se \u2014 you\u2019d hope not <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/store.asus.com\/us\/item\/202107AM010000001?utm_source=qcom&amp;utm_medium=button&amp;utm_campaign=cta\">for $1,500<\/a> \u2014 but because the marketing and design choices leading up to its creation are baffling.<\/p>\n<p>It is a phone that I mostly enjoyed using, but it left me with myriad questions about the reasoning behind the concept. I\u2019m not going to go through much of the phone\u2019s specs and such \u2014 you can read our announcement article\u00a0for that\u2014 but instead, I\u2019ll walk you through some of the thoughts I had while testing the device.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_it_a_Qualcomm_or_Asus_phone\"><\/span>Is it a Qualcomm or Asus phone?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>All of the phone\u2019s branding is around Qualcomm and Snapdragon, but Qualcomm insists it is an Asus phone. The phone\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.qualcomm.com\/snapdragoninsiders\/smartphone\">website<\/a> makes two small-print mentions of Asus and 32 mentions of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-64d4852e-9408-4ea7-95ba-bdfce9cb66a0\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.thenextweb.com\/tnw\/null\/entity\/qualcomm\">Qualcomm, although you do have to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/store.asus.com\/us\/item\/202107AM010000001?utm_source=qcom&amp;utm_medium=button&amp;utm_campaign=cta\">pre-order it from Asus<\/a><\/span>. Still, everyone is going to call it a Qualcomm phone.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Who_decided_%E2%80%98Smartphone_for_Snapdragon_Insiders_is_a_good_name\"><\/span>Who decided \u2018Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders\u2019 is a good name?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>SSI isn\u2019t even a good acronym, but there\u2019s no other way to really abbreviate the name that makes sense. It\u2019s annoying to even talk about the phone. \u2018Snapdragon Insiders phone\u2019 has too many syllables, but you can\u2019t just call it the \u2018Snapdragon phone,\u2019 because that just describes the majority of the Android market. You shouldn\u2019t call it \u2018the Qualcomm phone\u2019 because, as Qualcomm made very, the phone is designed, manufactured, and supported by Asus.<\/p>\n<p>To give just one example of the awkward branding: when I called Google Fi to ask if the SSI would be compatible with the network, two different support reps told me something along the lines of \u201csir, Snapdragon is a processor, not a phone,\u201d with the air of a someone trying to explain how TikTok works to their grandpa.<\/p>\n<p>I just don\u2019t know how that name made it through the marketing departments at Qualcomm and Asus. You can barely even fit it in a headline if you want to call the thing by its full name.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Who_are_these_Snapdragon_Insiders\"><\/span>Who are these Snapdragon Insiders?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Qualcomm is one of the most important companies in consumer <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>; its hardware shows up on most smartphones around the world. And yet the company seems to barely have a shred of mindshare outside of tech circles, and only a little more within them. I find it hard to believe there are all that many people looking to buy a $1,500 Qualcomm-branded-made-by-Asus phone, no matter how fancy the included headphones are.<\/p>\n<p>Qualcomm launched its <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.qualcomm.com\/snapdragoninsiders\">Insider program<\/a> in March, with vague promises of exclusive experiences and perks. Qualcomm says there are currently over 1.5 million Insiders, but there\u2019s a difference between signing up for an online community and actually being a Snapdragon \u2018enthusiast.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not sure I\u2019ve ever heard someone be excited about Qualcomm anything the way they might about other phone makers like Samsung or OnePlus, or even other chip designers like Intel, Nvidia, or AMD.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the existence of this phone shows that Qualcomm is <em>trying<\/em> to build up that mindshare, but it also shows the company doesn\u2019t know how exactly it wants to present itself in the mobile space.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_is_the_battery_so_small\"><\/span>Why is the battery so small?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This might be the most puzzling decision to me.<\/p>\n<p>This is a phone with a 6.8\u2033, 144Hz AMOLED display, a Snapdragon 888 processor, and some legit camera chops. It\u2019s a phone <em>clearly<\/em> aimed at power users. Qualcomm has clearly made some optimizations, so it lasted a bit longer than I expected, and it was usually able to get me through a day with about 5-6 hours of screen-on time. But I\u2019ve gotten used to phones that I rarely have to worry about charging, and the SSI is not one of them.<\/p>\n<p>Why cripple the battery like that? Almost every phone this size I can think of has a significantly larger battery, including the Asus ROG5 that the SSI is clearly based off. That phone has a 6,000 mAh battery. Sure, the SSI has a 65W charger that can fully charge the battery in under an hour, but that\u2019s not exactly a rare feature these days.<\/p>\n<p>Mostly though, I\u2019m pretty darn sure 99% of people who would consider themselves a \u2018Snapdragon enthusiast\u2019 would take an extra millimeter or gran for a beefier battery.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_is_Qualcomms_under-display_fingerprint_tech_on_the_back_of_the_phone\"><\/span>Why is Qualcomm\u2019s under-display fingerprint tech on the <em>back<\/em> of the phone?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I do actually know the answer to this question: Qualcomm\u2018s ultrasonic fingerprint reader doesn\u2019t work with the specific type of OLED panel in the phone\u2026 which is dumb. The phone should have been designed with a different panel. I get that the phone is supposed to show off Qualcomm tech, but it really doesn\u2019t make sense if you\u2019re not using the tech for its intended purpose.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_isnt_the_phone_using_Qualcomms_best_mobile_processor\"><\/span>Why isn\u2019t the phone using Qualcomm\u2019s best mobile processor?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The SSI uses the Snapdragon 888, but Qualcomm\u2018s best processor at the time of release is the 888+. Granted the only difference for the 888+ is a 5% faster clock speed, and Qualcomm says the SSI was in development before the 888+ was released\u2026 but again, it just seems like a case of bad planning. It is, you know, a Qualcomm phone. Kind of.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_is_the_camera_software_unfinished\"><\/span>Why is the camera software unfinished?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The unit I\u2019ve been testing is not the camera\u2019s \u2018final form,\u2019 so to speak. According to Qualcomm, later this month, the phone will receive a significant camera update that enables a DxOMark score of 133, the highest in the US and 6th globally.<\/p>\n<p>This update will include better autofocus, better overall texture\/noise performance, and improved night shot quality. It uses better noise reduction for both stills and video, improves the noise reduction, makes the live preview more accurate, and makes the telephoto and wide-angle cameras better in particular.<\/p>\n<p>As such, it didn\u2019t make much sense for me to review the camera yet. So far it seems like a really nice camera \u2014 at least with the primary sensor \u2014 but in its current form it doesn\u2019t particularly stand out against Samsung, OnePlus, and Google.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Just%E2%80%A6_why\"><\/span>Just\u2026 why?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>This is an enthusiast phone. So why is the bootloader locked? It could have been a great option for tweakers, given its aim toward power users.<\/li>\n<li>Qualcomm was not able to confirm how long Asus would provide software updates for the device. Four years of security updates were promised, which is nice, but reviewers weren\u2019t even guaranteed an update to Android 12, which is right around the corner.<\/li>\n<li>Why is there a battery-draining light-up logo on the back when the battery is already so small? It doesn\u2019t even RGB.<\/li>\n<li>The phone is supposed to offer super high-quality voice transmission, but this wasn\u2019t ready in time for review.<\/li>\n<li>There is no wireless charging. I\u2019ll now remind you that the phone costs $1,500. I like the combination of deep blue with red accents.<\/li>\n<li>I likewise appreciate the minimal software design. It\u2019s mostly a stock Android phone, with a few extra niceties thrown in.<\/li>\n<li>The screen quality seems great, and that 144Hz refresh rate is very nice.<\/li>\n<li>The phone is extremely smooth, holding onto that high refresh rate with nary a hiccup. It\u2019s one of the smoothest phones I\u2019ve used, right up there with the OnePlus 9 Pro<\/li>\n<li>The camera quality, especially from the primary camera, is quite good, and night shots were excellent.<\/li>\n<li>512GB of storage and 16GB or RAM is more than most laptops, so the phone should be a worthwhile long-term investment.<\/li>\n<li>The MW08 headphones included with the device are stylish and sound nice, although I tested a prototype unit that was not yet enabled for high-resolution streaming.<\/li>\n<li>The microphone quality seems really good.<\/li>\n<li>It has all the 5G bands. All of them! <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Travel<\/a> the world and never worry about signal compatibility. Plus it has dual 5G SIM cards.<\/li>\n<li>I noticed the phone seemed to have a particularly strong Bluetooth connection, for instance, maintaining a connection while walking past some blocks where my headphones would often cut out.<\/li>\n<li>Qualcomm offers multiple ways to tweak the CPU performance to maximize battery life vs performance. That said, the phone gets <em>really<\/em> hot in its highest performance mode. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.anandtech.com\/show\/16867\/the-smartphone-for-snapdragon-insiders-review\/3\">Anandetech<\/a> goes into detail on this front.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s one of the few phones to offer Qualcomm\u2018s AptX Adaptive codec which can tweak itself to adjust for latency vs sound quality. There are few compatible headphones, unfortunately.<\/li>\n<li>I actually really\u00a0like the idea of a phone that has optimized Qualcomm\u2018s processor and various software and\u00a0wireless technologies. Rarely do you get to see a phone that is truly optimized for the hardware inside it, and you\u2019d expect Qualcomm to offer the best iteration of these.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There is a lot to like here. I\u2019m just not sure it makes sense for most people.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Should_you_buy_it\"><\/span>Should you buy it?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Probably not.<\/p>\n<p>I like the phone itself. I feel like it\u2019s targeted at users like me. But I got to test it for free. If the SSI were priced a little more reasonably \u2014 even if it meant offering smaller storage configurations or an option without the fancy headphones \u2014 I think it could be a compelling option. Qualcomm does have some neat tricks, and it\u2019s nice to see all its technologies on display, but it\u2019s not enough that I think you should buy it over the competition at this price. It doesn\u2019t help that the camera and audio software were unfinished. At the time of review.<\/p>\n<p>But hey, if you\u2019re one of those diehard Snapdragon fans, maybe you\u2019re already <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/store.asus.com\/us\/item\/202107AM010000001?utm_source=qcom&amp;utm_medium=button&amp;utm_campaign=cta\">putting in a pre-order<\/a>.
