“#Afghanistan didn’t have to fall the way you let it<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

President Joe Biden admitted Monday \u201cthe buck stops with me\u201d \u2014 but nonetheless stood by his decision to rush troops out of Afghanistan, despite the nightmarish mess he\u2019s leaving behind.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am deeply saddened by the facts we now face, but I do not regret my decision,\u201d he said in a televised speech from the White House. He stands \u201csquarely behind\u201d his decision to withdraw.<\/p>\n

Yet he should<\/em> regret it: The Taliban takeover of Afghanistan over the past few weeks was an utter catastrophe, for Afghans and for world security \u2014 and he alone is responsible. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Biden claims whatever horrors are taking place there now could\u2019ve happ<\/a>ened any time we pulled out, whether years from now or years ago, and America simply couldn\u2019t continue to spend blood and treasure on an endless war.<\/p>\n

The choice, he asserted, was between ramping up and fighting the Taliban all over again or withdrawing with all the chaos and misery that entails.<\/p>\n

Wrong.<\/p>\n

Yes, Americans back a withdrawal, after 20 years of maintaining soldiers in that country. But there was no urgent crisis demanding an immedia<\/a>te, haphazard pullout that leaves Afghans at the mercy of monsters \u2014 and America less safe. Biden already pushed off President Donald Trump\u2019s May 1, 2021, withdrawal date once; he could\u2019ve done it again (especially given that the Taliban have violated the terms of the agreement) and secured a better arrangement and more planning in the meantime.<\/p>\n
