But everything depends on circumstances and local culture.\u201d India\u2019s \u201clocal traditions of election and deliberation antedated British colonization. Japan had the rule of law and national feeling. Tunisia is as much Roman as Arab-Muslim.\u201d But \u201cthe project of imposing a single central state and national elections\u201d on Afghanistan \u201cwas utopian; at most, one might have hoped for a confederation of tribes.\u201d The West shouldn\u2019t \u201crenounce\u201d democracy, \u201cbut we must adapt the message of civilization to its recipients and choose the messengers well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>History lesson: Why the Afghan Army Folded<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerica didn\u2019t predict this sudden collapse, but it could have and should have,\u201d though the \u201cwar effort\u201d was \u201cundermined from the start by a failure to study Afghan realities,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2021\/08\/16\/afghanistan-history-taliban-collapse-504977\">laments Anatol Lieven at Politico<\/a>. \u201cAfghan society has been described\u201d as \u201ca \u2018permanent conversation.\u2019 Alliances shift, and people, families and tribes make rational calculations based on the risk they face.\u201d Opposing factions \u201chave long negotiated arrangements to stop fighting,\u201d even sometimes trading \u201csoldiers in exchange for safe passage.\u201d Such deals are \u201ccritical to understanding why the Afghan army today has collapsed so quickly (and, for the most part, without violence).\u201d For two decades, \u201cUS military and intelligence services have <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly either not understood or chosen to ignore this dynamic as they sought to paint an optimistic picture of American efforts to build a strong, loyal Afghan army.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Doctors: COVID \u2018Most Likely\u2019 Came From Lab<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Citing suspicious activities in Wuhan, China, since the summer of 2019 and questions about the coronavirus\u2019 evolution,<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/wuhan-virology-lab-leak-gain-of-function-research-ccp-beijing-covid-origins-coronavirus-11629037765?mod=opinion_lead_pos7\"> ex-Centers for Disease Control and Prevention boss Robert Redfield and Dr. Marc Siegel at The Wall Street Journal conclude <\/a>the bug \u201cwas most likely uncontained in a laboratory\u201d and \u201cescaped unintentionally.\u201d China, they note, blocked the CDC from visiting the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Virus \u201cbat sequences were deleted from the institute\u2019s database.\u201d The lab put out bids for a new ventilation system. And the idea that a \u201cvirus comes out of a bat cave and infects humans by the millions\u201d is simply \u201cnot biologically plausible.\u201d Given the \u201cglobal need to know what we are dealing with . . . we need a comprehensive bipartisan investigation\u201d into COVID-19\u2019s origins.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conservative: Afghanistan Needed an Atat\u00fcrk<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/spectatorworld.com\/topic\/the-american-epoch-of-failure\/\">At Spectator World, Daniel McCarthy sneers<\/a> that \u201cfor 20 years, America built a Potemkin village and called it Afghanistan.\u201d The blame for its collapse rests with the whole coterie of people in political office, as well as in \u201cthe <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>, the think tanks and among the parts of the public who are sufficiently moved to have feelings about the plight of Afghanistan but not sufficiently interested to do any serious thinking about it.\u201d To wit, if \u201cthere is any hope for liberalism or democracy in such a tribal, sectarian, stateless place, it would require a brutal autocrat prepared to re-found the entire society, breaking blood ties and replacing religion with a new creed\u201d \u2014 the kind of thing Atat\u00fcrk had to pull off in Turkey at the turn of the last century, though even he \u201chad much more promising material to work with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Foreign desk: Biden\u2019s Monumental Fail<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFew American presidents have had their blunders so spectacularly validated in real time as Joe Biden in Afghanistan,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/todaysdebate\/2021\/08\/15\/bidens-departure-afghanistan-predictable-and-disastrous\/8142482002\/\">charges the USA \u00adToday editorial board<\/a>. Last month, the president pooh-poohed the possibility of the Taliban sweeping Afghanistan, only for Taliban militants to enter \u201cKabul Sunday, demanding unconditional surrender after wresting nearly the entire country from government control in a matter of weeks. .\u2009.\u2009. And behind the broad <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> of bedlam were voices of thousands reduced to living in abject fear with the Taliban\u2019s arrival; many if not most of them women, who face a crushing and uncertain future of subjugation under a famously misogynistic regime.\u201d And Team Biden was left shocked and helpless, with nothing to offer but \u201cdamage control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2014 Compiled by The Post Editorial Board<\/em>\n                        <\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
