But not just any drive will work, as Sony has some specific requirements they must meet to work in the PS5. The good <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> is that we did the research, so you don\u2019t have to.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_to_Look_for_in_a_PS5_SSD\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_0\">What to Look for in a PS5 SSD<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>We\u2019re about to go over a lot of the basic requirements Sony gives for internal SSDs (you can find these in more detail, along with an installation tutorial, on the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.playstation.com\/en-us\/support\/hardware\/ps5-install-m2-ssd\/\">PlayStation website<\/a>). We\u2019ve already ensured all the drives featured on this list meet those requirements, but they\u2019re good to know regardless.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_note\"><p><strong>Note:<\/strong> We\u2019re talking specifically about an internal SSD here\u2014an external SSD isn\u2019t fast enough to play PS5 games.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Drive Type:\u00a0<\/strong>The first thing you should know about internal SSDs for the PS5 is that they must be <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/404627\/what-are-nvme-drives-and-should-you-buy-one\/\">NVMe SSD drives<\/a>\u00a0instead of SATA drives. This is both for performance purposes (NVMe\u2019s are faster) and because NVMe drives actually fit inside the PS5.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Form Factor:\u00a0<\/strong>This refers to the size and general construction of the SSD, and the PS5 specifically uses an m.2 SSD. It accepts five different form factors:\u00a02230, 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110. It doesn\u2019t really matter which form factor you get. That said, all of the picks on this list use 2280.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Read and Write Speeds:\u00a0<\/strong>Sony states that any SSD you install in the PS5 must have a minimum read speed of 5,500MB\/s. That\u2019s pretty fast in the world of storage, but the reason for this is the PS5 depends on high read speeds for the way it loads game assets. Write speed (when the console is saving something to the SSD) is a lot less important, evident by the fact that Sony doesn\u2019t require a certain speed, but we\u2019ll note it regardless for all the drives on this list. Both of these are measured in megabytes per second (MB\/s for short).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Capacity:\u00a0<\/strong>The whole point of getting a new SSD for the PS5 is more storage, as the default PS5 SSD only comes with 650GB. The PS5 can accept drives ranging from 250GB to 4TB, so you have a lot of room for expansion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_Word_of_Warning_You_Need_a_Heatsink\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_1\">A Word of Warning: You Need a Heatsink<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A heatsink increases heat flow, so computer components don\u2019t overheat, and Sony makes it very clear you will need one for any SSD you install in the PS5. There are two types of heatsinks: Double-sided and single-sided. Double-sided provides more heat flow, which should grant slight performance boosts, but single-sided will work fine according to Sony (they\u2019re also easier to deal with).<\/p>\n<p>We checked out some heatsinks and found that <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Copper-Heatsinks-Cooler-Laptop%EF%BC%882-Pack%EF%BC%89\/dp\/B07XD8M43P\/ref=?tag=reviewgeek-20\">MHQJRH\u2019s single-sided<\/a> heatsink and\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/QIVYNSRY-heatsink-Double-Sided-Thermal-Silicone\/dp\/B08QD93S3F\/ref=?tag=reviewgeek-20\">QIVYNSRY\u2019s double-sided<\/a> heatsink should fit in the PS5 with the drives listed below. However, Sony\u2019s requirements for this are very specific, so we encourage you to do your own math to make sure your specific SSD and heatsink combination will fit.
