The suddenly victorious Taliban <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/8\/16\/taliban-says-afghanistan-war-over-as-president-diplomats-flee\">blocked access<\/a> to the Kabul airport as countries who fought the Muslim fundamentalists for two decades scrambled to get local staff and their families onto planes and out of the country. The <strong>Canadian government faces difficult questions<\/strong> about the fate of interpreters and others who served the Canadian armed Forces, the Globe <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-kabul-safe-houses-set-up-by-canadians-for-afghan-interpreters-under\/\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On the campaign trail in Montreal, <strong>Justin Trudeau<\/strong>, who has not paused his campaign to deal with the matter, told reporters that Canada is working with allies to try to get people out of an \u201cexceedingly dangerous\u201d situation, the Globe <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-canada-working-closely-with-allies-on-evacuation-from-kabul-amid\/\">reports<\/a>, but a CAF Globemaster in Kuwait must wait for <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roval of U.S. commanders. Trudeau said at least 807 Afghans have been evacuated and 500 have arrived in Canada. Special forces soldiers remain in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Retired Canadian major <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> David Fraser, who once commanded more than 2,000 NATO coalition troops in Afghanistan, estimates there are still about 800 Afghans of interest to Canada who are stuck there. He said these are former Afghan helpers and translators, drivers and cooks who worked for Canada as well as their family \u2026 Fraser said he suspects the Canadian government is asking the United States government to ferry more Afghans out on behalf of Canada \u2026 \u201cThe United States seems to be the only country in the world with the resources and the will to get people out. God bless them for doing that.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Former Globe correspondent <strong>Graeme Smith\u00a0<\/strong>has a thoughtful <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/article-a-fearful-silence-descends-on-afghanistan\/\">column<\/a>\u00a0on how Afghans are bracing for the new era.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\"><strong>O\u2019Toole\u2019s plan:<\/strong> On the campaign trail in Ottawa, <strong>Erin O\u2019Toole<\/strong> released an ambitious <strong>160-page<\/strong> election platform, promising to create <strong>a million jobs<\/strong>, increase health funding and take money the Liberals have earmarked for child care and give it directly to parents, CBC <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/conservative-party-election-platform-1.6142319\">reports<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote><p>Unlike\u00a0past Conservative platforms,\u00a0this one\u00a0<strong>embraces\u00a0a robust role for government<\/strong> in the economy through large cash injections to help businesses weather the pandemic\u00a0crisis over the next two years. The multi-billion dollar plan has not yet been costed; the party says\u00a0the Parliamentary Budget Officer has not finished studying the numbers. O\u2019Toole said a Conservative government would balance the budget in ten years\u2019 time. The federal\u00a0deficit for this fiscal year alone is expected to be $381.6 billion. \u201cYou\u2019ll probably notice ideas that you haven\u2019t heard from Conservatives like me before. <strong>It\u2019s time for Conservatives to take inequality seriously<\/strong>, because that\u2019s becoming more of a problem in our country,\u201d \u2026 O\u2019Toole says in the opening paragraphs of the document.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In <em>Maclean\u2019s,<\/em> <strong>Paul Wells<\/strong>, who has had a look at the large, detailed document, seems impressed by the effort that went into this.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Canada\u2019s Recovery Plan<\/em>\u00a0(rejected title:\u00a0<em>Erin O\u2019Toole\u2019s Hail Mary Pass<\/em>) is <strong>an attempt to answer every question anyone will ever have<\/strong> about O\u2019Toole and his party. Surely a doomed attempt\u2014it\u2019s always easy to come up with more questions, this week often featuring the words \u201cnasal swabs\u201d\u2014but ambitious in the trying nonetheless.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Also in <em><strong>Maclean\u2019s<\/strong><\/em>, your correspondent has a column on how the right wing of O\u2019Toole\u2019s party may make it hard for him to run his campaign.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>These internal divisions are making it hard for O\u2019Toole to stake out defensible turf. In his first <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> availability after the writ drop on Sunday, he<strong> tried and failed to dodge questions about vaccine mandates<\/strong>. He likely is not able to support them without his MPs rebelling, so he is jammed, stuck opposing a popular policy, which the Liberals will be delighted to discuss whenever anyone asks them about anything even vaguely pandemical. Liberals can likely use that to pivot away from the most difficult question for them: Why are we having an election at all? The honest answer, which Justin Trudeau must under no circumstances give, is that he wants a majority and thinks he can get one, while everyone is still feeling good about having been vaccinated.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In the <em>Sun<\/em>, <strong>Brian Lilley<\/strong> has a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/torontosun.com\/news\/election-2021\/lilley-trudeaus-vaccine-policy-isnt-mandatory-its-actually-the-same-as-otooles\">different take<\/a> on mandatory vaccines for civil servants as an election issue. In these cases, we will discuss accommodations that could be put in place,\u201d Donoghue writes. \u201cFor those who refuse vaccination, we will need to consider alternative measures, such as testing and screening.\u201d So, <strong>Trudeau\u2019s plan is mandatory vaccinations with testing<\/strong> and screening for workers who refuse, while <strong>O\u2019Toole\u2019s is voluntary vaccinations with testing<\/strong> and screening for workers who refuse.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/section>\n<p>Still, there is a difference between parties in one way: Not all CPC candidates are vaccinated, unlike the NDP and Liberals, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/davidakin\/status\/1427370022981230592\">according to<\/a> <strong>David Akin <\/strong>on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, the federal government does not seem to be about to force anyone to get vaccinated any time soon, least of all election workers, as the Global <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/8116807\/elections-canada-poll-worker-vaccination\/\">story<\/a> shows.<\/p>\n<p><strong>OPC-LPC truce<\/strong>: The <em>Star\u2019s<\/em> Robert Benzie has a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/politics\/federal-election\/2021\/08\/16\/doug-ford-was-justin-trudeaus-punching-bag-in-2019-for-this-campaign-insiders-say-the-leaders-have-called-a-truce.html\">scoop<\/a>: Trudeau and Ford have reached a truce for the duration of the campaign.\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Singh wants clawback:<\/strong> In Toronto,\u00a0<strong>Jagmeet Singh<\/strong> promised to take back money from CEOs who received federal subsidies intended to protect workers\u2019 jobs, emphasizing his party\u2019s pitch to make the rich pay, the Canadian Press <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/pmn\/news-pmn\/canada-news-pmn\/ndp-says-it-would-redirect-wage-subsidy-money-that-went-to-executives'\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div>\n<strong>Bloc target<\/strong>: In Quebec City,\u00a0<strong>Yves-Fran\u00e7ois Blanchet<\/strong> said the Bloc Quebecois hopes to win 40 seats in the election, up from the 32 he won in the 2019 election, <em>Le Journal de Montr\u00e9al<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.journaldemontreal.com\/2021\/08\/16\/le-bloc-quebecois-vise-40-sieges-aux-communes\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abJe me plais \u00e0 r\u00eaver \u00e0 40, parce que, 40, <strong>c\u2019est la majorit\u00e9 des si\u00e8ges au Qu\u00e9bec<\/strong>.
