\nIf you hadn\u2019t heard,\u00a0OnlyFans<\/strong> is going through some major changes.<\/p>\n

As of October 1, the site known primarily as a platform for sex workers and adult performers will officially BAN all porn on the site! In a statement, the UK-based company said the removal of all sexually explicit material is \u201cto comply with the requests of our banking partners and payout providers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Naturally the folks who put OnlyFans on the map in the first place had something to say. Adult content creators en masse blasted the decision, with some pointing the finger at one person in particular.<\/p>\n

User Camila Elle<\/strong> lamented:<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel betrayed by OnlyFans, I made it my entire livelihood, and quit my dreams of becoming a doctor to pursue a full time career on the site.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The 21-year-old, who is still in college, continued:<\/p>\n

\u201cSex workers built this platform, it\u2019s a business to us. We were the ones who promoted OnlyFans across social media<\/a>. They used us to build the site and now they\u2019re throwing us away.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

She isn\u2019t alone.<\/p>\n

45-year-old\u00a0Nita Marie<\/strong>, who says she has been making $1.8 million a year from her subscribers is worried about the safety of sex workers who suddenly find themselves without a \u201csafe and legal\u201d say of earning money:<\/p>\n

\u201cOnlyFans helps reduce sex trafficking and illegal sex work as it\u2019s down to the creators who choose to post content. Online sex work is verified, safe and legal and OnlyFans also offers an opportunity for the user to interact with the creator in a safe environment. Changing their conditions could cause huge issues for people.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Model Ona Artist<\/strong> blasted the site\u2019s business decision \u2014 and questioned their reasons, saying:<\/p>\n

\u201cIf OnlyFans does go ahead with this it\u2019s suicide. They might claim it\u2019s because of payment processors rules but those companies put through porn purchases all over the web\u2026 Models will always find a way to share sexual content with those who want it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Sex worker Satine Doll<\/strong> tweeted it as bluntly as anyone:<\/p>\n

\u201cSeems like Onlyfans used us sex workers to get huge then tells us to f**k off when celebs got on board.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

And there it is. The elephant in the room. Celebrities.<\/p>\n

Back in August 2020,\u00a0Bella Thorne<\/strong> made headlines for joining the adult platform to post basically the same content she\u2019d been putting up on\u00a0Instagram<\/strong> for free for years \u2014 incredibly sexy shots in lingerie or bikinis, sometimes strategically covered nudes. Only now they were behind a paywall. Critics also say she used the reputation of OnlyFans, cultivated for years by sex workers, to make it seem like what she was showing was more explicit \u2014 to the point where she was even accused of fraud! But that didn\u2019t stop the money from rolling in. The former Disney<\/strong> star set a record by raking in $1 million of subscript<\/a>ions on her first day.<\/p>\n

She was quickly followed by many other celebs who parlayed their IG followers, in combination with the allure of the adult platform, into big bucks.\u00a0Blac Chyna<\/strong>,\u00a0Jordyn Woods<\/strong>,\u00a0Tyler Posey<\/strong>,\u00a0Bhad Bhabie<\/strong>,\u00a0Tana Mongeau<\/strong>,\u00a0Tyga<\/strong>,\u00a0Cardi B<\/strong>, Dorinda Medley<\/strong>, and\u00a0Amber Rose<\/strong> are all on the platform, sharing wildly varying types of content. (Some are even really doing porn!)<\/p>\n

It was this influx of celebs that seemed to usher in the new era for OnlyFans \u2014 which looks to leave behind all the sex workers and just become another IG, only charging money and not deleting nipples.<\/p>\n

But Bella is getting the brunt of the blame, far more than other celebs. Here\u2019s a sampling of responses to the news<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\u201chey where\u2019s Bella Thorne in all this OnlyFans drama? I thought she wanted to be the big celebrity to help remove the stigma behind sex work? OH that\u2019s right she only cares when she\u2019s making the $$ and doesn\u2019t have to worry about actual SWers lives and income\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBella Thorne started it all. She proved that Only Fans could make money millions off just thong shots. There was no reason to have sexual content on it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Why Bella? Well, there\u2019s certainly the fact she was one of the first big mainstream celebs to move in. She certainly set herself up for that one when she declared herself the \u201cfirst.\u201d<\/p>\n

But there\u2019s also the controversy of her \u201cscamming\u201d fans with fake nudes a year ago, which led to OF changing its entire rules for payment \u2014 hurting the adult performers even then.<\/p>\n

But is that fair? If it weren\u2019t the Shake It Up<\/em> alum, wouldn\u2019t someone else be getting the blame? Was it always destined to go mainstream and screw over the sex workers? We\u2019ve seen this happen before; both Tumblr<\/strong> and Patreon<\/strong> banned adult content in 2018, pushing out a big portion of their early user base. It seems this is the way of technology<\/a> \u2014 sex workers, always looking for somewhere safe to make money, become early adopters, then when the platform reaches a certain level of success they\u2019re told to get rid of the explicit stuff because\u2026 we don\u2019t know, it makes some people feel icky?<\/p>\n

TBH we don\u2019t get it. Let them live their lives! If you don\u2019t like it, don\u2019t subscribe. But don\u2019t keep pushing them away.<\/p>\n
