When he shows pictures of celebrities like Kendall Jenner or Miley Cyrus to his students on a screen, they im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely recognize them. But faced with photos of policymakers like Mike Pence or Nancy Pelosi, the children stare blankly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That ignorance is no joke to Adams, he writes in his new book, \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Hollowed-Out-Warning-Americas-Generation\/dp\/1684511984\/?tag=nypost-20\">Hollowed Out: A Warning About America\u2019s Next Generation<\/a>\u201d (Regnery Publishing), out now.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to brace ourselves for what lies ahead. I write this book as an alarm bell . . . a project born out of worry, concern and frustration.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A National Teacher of the Year nominee, Adams frets that today\u2019s youngsters are \u201cbarren of the behavior, values and hopes from which human beings have traditionally found higher meaning . . . or even simple contentment.\u201d Adams calls them \u201chollowed out,\u201d a generation living solitary lives, hyperconnected to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> but unattached from their families, churches or communities. He cites statistics showing teen depression rose 63 percent from 2007 to 2017 while teen suicide grew 56 percent. While only 2 percent of Americans identified themselves as \u201catheists\u201d in 1984, that number was 22 percent by 2020. A college religion professor notes that when he discusses Matthew from the Bible, many students think he\u2019s talking about Matthew Perry of \u201cFriends.\u201d And Luke? His students assume it\u2019s the guy from \u201cBeverly Hills 90210.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Religion has been replaced by \u201ca mass culture of \u2018banality, conformity, and self-indulgence,\u2019 \u201d Adams writes, not to mention an obsession with technology. He notes that in the 1970s, more than 50 percent of high schoolers hung out with friends \u201cevery day,\u201d but by 2020 that number had dropped below 33 percent. Modern high-schoolers regularly forego traditional activities like Friday night football <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>s to hunker down alone, \u201cwatching Netflix, Hulu, or Disney+.\u201d That helps explain why in 2012 49 percent of teens ranked \u201cin person\u201d as their favorite way to talk but in 2018 only 32 percent did.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-nypost-small-post\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"231\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/hollowed-out.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=231\" alt=\"Jeremy S. In 2014, a US <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> was <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/recruits-ineligibility-tests-the-military-1403909945\">quoted<\/a> saying \u201cthe quality of people willing to serve has been declining rapidly,\u201d with 71 percent of current 17-24-year-olds ineligible due to obesity, criminal records, mental health or drug issues. Meanwhile, a recent survey highlighted that while 70 percent of senior citizens could pass a US citizenship test, less than 20 percent of those under 45 could, Adams writes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Not that today\u2019s youngsters seem to care.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never hear young people professing love for their country,\u201d Adams writes. \u201cI used to. But not lately.
