Because it\u2019s one thing to, as Trudeau did, pledge reflection and introspection. It\u2019s quite another to say no to an ally in need of military assistance, or decline an invitation to launch airstrikes against a genocidal regime. If, or maybe more accurately when, we get there, it would be nice to have a government which has already elucidated the principles which govern its engagement. Will Canada put boots on the ground? Will it topple one government in favour of another? Will it stay behind to do counter-insurgency? Will its peacekeeping forces do patrols, or will they stay inside the wire?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In the <em>Ottawa Citizen<\/em>, <strong>David Pugliese<\/strong> goes through his files and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ottawacitizen.com\/news\/national\/defence-watch\/analysis-afghan-mission-was-doomed-to-fail-but-canadian-leaders-refused-to-listen\">reminds us<\/a> that many important people were totally wrong about the whole thing.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Liberal Senator <strong>Colin Kenny<\/strong> warned in 2009 that the Afghan mission was futile. \u201cWhat we hoped to accomplish in Afghanistan has proved to be impossible,\u201d Kenny noted. \u201cWe are hurtling toward a Vietnam ending,\u201d Then Brig.-Gen.<strong> Jonathan Vance<\/strong> rebuked Kenny for his \u201cuninformed\u201d opinion.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Long-term care help:<\/strong> Trudeau made his Afghan comments at a campaign stop in Victoria where he unveiled a campaign promise: $9 billion for Canada\u2019s long-term care sector, CBC <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/liberal-ltc-spending-platform-1.6146527\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Long-term care residents accounted for around 80 per cent\u00a0of all reported COVID-19 deaths during the first wave of the pandemic, and\u00a0continued to account for\u00a0a disproportionate share of deaths until vaccines were made widely available.\u00a0Trudeau said a Liberal government also\u00a0would push for a new $25 per hour minimum wage for personal support workers \u2014 although achieving that new standard would require cooperation from the provinces and territories.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>O\u2019Toole pro-choice:<\/strong> In Ottawa, <strong>Erin O\u2019Toole<\/strong> pushed pack against Liberal claims that he\u2019s just \u201cpretending\u201d to support a woman\u2019s right to choose, CBC <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/erin-otoole-pro-choice-conscience-rights-1.6146200\">reports<\/a>. \u201cLet me be perfectly clear. As a pro-choice leader of this party, I will make sure that we defend the rights of women to make the choice for themselves with respect to their own health. We will make sure abortion services are available from one ocean to the other.\u201d<\/p>\n<section id=\"inread-wrapper-id-2016056\"\/>O\u2019Toole was responding to a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MaryamMonsef\/status\/1428121957308981249?s=20\">tweet thread<\/a> from Liberal MP <strong>Maryam Monsef<\/strong> , who cast doubt on O\u2019Toole\u2019s position, a normal feature of Liberal-Conservative battles in Canadian election campaigns.<\/p>\n<section class=\"article-content__content-group\"><strong>Singh promises health money:<\/strong> Federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh went to\u00a0the Conservative-held riding of Edmonton Griesbach to take shots at Jason Kenney\u2019s and promise a $250 million Critical Shortages Fund to address the shortage of nurses and health care workers, the Edmonton Journal <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/edmontonjournal.com\/news\/politics\/election-2021\/federal-election-ndp-singh-edmonton-kenney\">reports<\/a>.<strong>So does Blanchet:<\/strong> <strong>Yves-Fran\u00e7ois Blanchet<\/strong> hit the same subject in Gatineau, promising to support premiers who are demanding $28 billion in fresh federal health spending, <em>La Presse<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lapresse.ca\/elections-federales\/2021-08-19\/transferts-en-sante\/blanchet-reclame-une-conversation-avec-les-provinces.php\">reports<\/a>.<\/section>\n<p><strong>Reprieve for Paul:<\/strong> Green Party Leader Annamie Paul has some new allies on the party\u2019s federal council, the Canadian Press <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/politics\/federal-election\/2021\/08\/19\/pro-annamie-paul-execs-voted-into-green-party-positions-but-its-not-a-clean-sweep.html\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the <em>National Post<\/em>, <strong>Tasha Kheiriddin<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/opinion\/tasha-kheiriddin-trudeau-doesnt-think-about-monetary-policy-but-he-should-or-well-all-pay-the-price\">ponders<\/a> Trudeau\u2019s comment Wednesday that he \u201cdoesn\u2019t think about monetary policy,\u201d and sees an opening for opposition critiques.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" data-async=\"\">All leaders have a scant 35 days to score their points, in an atmosphere of pandemic uncertainty and financial anxiety. <strong>If the opposition succeed in dragging the Liberals onto economic terrain, and attacking from both the left and the right on issues of affordability<\/strong>, their incumbent advantage could melt away.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p data-async=\"\"><strong>Sinclair speaks:<\/strong> In <em>Maclean\u2019s<\/em>, <strong>Marie-Danielle Smith<\/strong> has a long interview with <strong>Murray Sinclair<\/strong>, in which he reveals, among other interesting things, that he was asked if he wanted to be\u00a0governor <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Q: The first Indigenous governor general was just <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ointed.
