“#’Chapelwaite’ Star Adrien Brody Introduces Stephen King’s New Horror Series<\/a><\/strong>”

Evil worms its way into a tiny New England town in this harrowing adaptation of Stephen King\u2019s short story \u201cJerusalem\u2019s Lot.\u201d Set in the mid-19th century, the series stars Oscar winner Adrien Brody (The Pianist<\/i>) as Charles Boone, a sea captain who moves with his three children into an ancestral home in Preacher\u2019s Corners, Maine, following the death of his Polynesian wife. It\u2019s not a happ<\/a>y homecoming.<\/p>\n

\u201c[There\u2019s] this built-in animosity because of the Boone family\u2019s past wrongs and, on top of that, the children being foreigners,\u201d notes Brody. \u201cThis quaint town is very challenging.\u201d<\/p>\n

Helping ease the transition is Rebecca Morgan (Schitt\u2019s Creek<\/i> alum Emily Hampshire), a progressive writer who takes a job as governess to the children (above, from left, Ian Ho, Sirena Gulamgaus and Jennifer Ens, with Brody). Her real motive: \u201cTo write this story about them and serve it up to the Atlantic Monthly<\/i>,\u201d says Jason Filardi, who cocreated the show with his brother Peter. \u201cWe always looked at her as a Mary Shelley [author of Frankenstein<\/i>].\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the children\u2019s father runs the sawmill that\u2019s part of his legacy. Soon it becomes clear that xenophobia and the frightful visions plaguing Boone (his bathwater turns to the worm-ridden soil of a grave) are the least of their worries, as troubles of a more malevolent nature begin to surface. \u201cI love the transition,\u201d Brody says of Charles\u2019 slow-burn realization that the scary things he\u2019s experiencing aren\u2019t all in his head. \u201cHe unravels, and then the whole world starts to unravel around them.\u201d<\/p>\n

While fans of King\u2019s tale know what that means (\u201cJerusalem\u2019s Lot,\u201d from the collection Night Shift<\/i>, is a precursor to the vampire classic \u2019Salem\u2019s Lot<\/i>), the folks of Preacher\u2019s Corners have no idea what they\u2019re in for. \u201cThis is 1850, the time period before [Bram Stoker\u2019s] Dracula<\/i> was written,\u201d Jason explains. \u201cOur characters are learning the rules as they go along. It\u2019s not like they know, \u2018Oh, yeah, it\u2019s vampires, and this is how you kill them.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Just as daunting offscreen, the Filardis say, was expanding the source material\u2014\u201creally just a series of letters between a couple of characters,\u201d Jason notes\u2014into 10 episodes of television that earned the author\u2019s seal of approval. \u201cYou basically do a proposal; he reads it and gives either a thumbs-up or a thumbs-down,\u201d Peter adds. \u201cHe\u2019s the master.\u201d<\/p>\n
