Like it or not, we\u2019re getting a Vanilla Ice<\/strong> biopic. It\u2019s called\u00a0To the Extreme<\/em><\/strong>, and it will star Dave Franco<\/strong> as\u00a0Robert Matthew Van Winkle<\/strong>, AKA Vanilla Ice, who was something of a big deal in the 1990s, with his song \u201cIce Ice Baby\u201d ending up the first hip hop single to top the\u00a0Billboard<\/i>\u00a0charts. Unfortunately for Vanilla Ice, it all eventually came crashing down.<\/p>\n

Speaking with Insider, Dave Franco revealed he\u2019s playing Vanilla Ice in the biopic\u00a0To the Extreme<\/em> (which is also the name of Vanilla Ice\u2019s 1990 album that featured \u201cIce Ice Baby\u201d). \u201cWe have been in development for a while but we are inching closer and closer to preproduction,\u201d Franco said. \u201cRob is such a sweet and intelligent guy and he\u2019s been super helpful in the process of getting all the details correct and making us privy to information the public doesn\u2019t know. Just talking to him I can\u2019t help but think about the rabbit holes I\u2019m going to go down to get ready for the role.\u201d<\/p>\n

Franco also compared the project to\u00a0The Disaster Artist<\/em>, the film he co-starred in about\u00a0Tommy Wiseau and the making of the infamous so-bad-it\u2019s-good movie\u00a0The Room<\/em>: \u201cWith that movie, people expected us to make a broad comedy where we make fun of Tommy Wiseau, but the more real we played it, the funnier and heartfelt it was \u2014 that\u2019s the tone we want for this one as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

With a script<\/a> written by\u00a0Chris Goodwin<\/strong> and Phillip Van<\/strong>,\u00a0To the Extreme<\/em> \u201ccenters on the rise of the rapper (whose real name is Robert Van Winkle) from a high school dropout selling cars in Dallas to having the first hip-hop single to top the Billboard charts with \u2018Ice Ice Baby.\u2019 A young Vanilla Ice struggles with stardom, extortion attempts, and selling out as he makes music history.\u201d<\/p>\n

I remember Vanilla Ice being a huge deal when I was a kid, and I also remember his career pretty much collapsing not long after, but not before he made his own movie \u2013 the 1991 movie\u00a0Cool As Ice<\/em> \u2013 and appeared in\u00a0Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze<\/em>. Beyond that, though, I\u2019ll admit to not knowing much about Mr. Van Winkle, save for his attempt at a comeback with a rap-metal album. The casting of Franco as Vanilla Ice is an overall good idea \u2013 he resembles the rapper, and he can turn in a memorable performance. All in all, this sounds like a film to watch out for.<\/p>\n
