{"id":329058,"date":"2021-08-23T07:33:50","date_gmt":"2021-08-23T04:33:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/ron-duguay-remembers-rangers-rod-gilbert-no-one-better\/"},"modified":"2021-08-23T07:33:50","modified_gmt":"2021-08-23T04:33:50","slug":"ron-duguay-remembers-rangers-rod-gilbert-no-one-better","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/ron-duguay-remembers-rangers-rod-gilbert-no-one-better\/","title":{"rendered":"#Ron Duguay remembers Rangers&#8217; Rod Gilbert: &#8216;No one better&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Ron Duguay remembers Rangers&#8217; Rod Gilbert: &#8216;No one better&#8217;<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n        <\/aside>\n<p>The first person to greet Ron Duguay and show him New York when he joined the Rangers in 1977 was Rod Gilbert.<\/p>\n<p>This was Duguay\u2019s rookie NHL campaign and turned out to be the last of Gilbert\u2019s 18 seasons in New York, but that didn\u2019t stop the future Hall of Famer and face of the franchise from welcoming the team\u2019s first-round draft pick to the team.<\/p>\n<p>Duguay, who now co-hosts The Post\u2019s Rangers podcast \u201cUp in the Blue Seats,\u201d remembered his former teammate and longtime friend Sunday night after the Rangers announced <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> of Gilbert\u2019s passing at 80 earlier in the evening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first time I walked into Madison Square Garden to sign my contract, he was the first man to meet me,\u201d Duguay recalled in a phone interview. \u201cAnd he took me out that night, too, kind of a celebration, and that was the beginning of a long relationship.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was such a likable person that he left an im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>te impression on you. So yes, he was my introduction to the New York Rangers. Everyone turned to Rod, always,\u201d Duguay said. \u201cI saw firsthand how much he <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>reciated the fans. He gave so much of himself. Nothing was ever a bother to him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery single <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> he was there, he was there because he enjoyed to be there. He enjoyed being him and having played for the New York Rangers. I would see what he meant to the fans, people meeting him for the first time. He was such a joy. Always laughing. Always a smile on his face. And the stories he\u2019d tell.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Earlier Sunday evening, Duguay posted a video of a goal Brian Leetch scored in Game 7 of the 1994 Stanley Cup finals against Vancouver. The camera cut to the seats behind the penalty box and showed Gilbert giving Duguay a high-five.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Brian Leetch Goal Game 7 Stanley Cup Finals Game 7, 1994\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7U0Hhx4bUGs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI never even knew this footage existed until today,\u201d Duguay said. \u201cI had the pleasure of being with Rod Gilbert when the Rangers finally won the Cup. He had his chances in his career, but it obviously had been so long [since 1940], and we celebrated together. I got to experience that with him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Cup really meant a lot to him, because he was such a part of the fabric of the organization for so long. To be with him when the Rangers finally won was an amazing experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The two continued to work together through the ensuing years, and Duguay said he \u201cwould drop everything to do anything for that man\u201d whenever asked to appear at a team event, especially one run by Gilbert.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat title, Mr. Ranger, he took it seriously,\u201d Duguay said. \u201cYou would see him in suite visits and walking in the aisles, he\u2019d stop for everyone who wanted a picture or an autograph. He absolutely loved it, and the fans adored him. And he never got tired of any of it.
