They warn that the tech is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/emotion-reading-tech-fails-the-racial-bias-test-108404\">prone to racial biases<\/a>, doesn\u2019t account for cultural differences, and is\u00a0used for <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-57101248\">mass surveillance<\/a>. Some argue that AI\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/onezero.medium.com\/a-i-cant-detect-our-emotions-3c1f6fce2539\">isn\u2019t even capable<\/a> of accurately detecting emotions.<\/p>\n<p>A new study <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-021-25352-6\">published in Nature Communications<\/a> has shone further light on these shortcomings.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers analyzed photos of actors to examine whether facial movements reliably express emotional states.<\/p>\n<p>They found that people use different facial movements to communicate similar emotions. One individual may frown when they\u2019re angry, for example, but another would widen their eyes or even laugh.<\/p>\n<p>The research also showed that people use similar gestures to convey different emotions, such as scowling to express both concentration and anger.<\/p>\n<p>Study co-author Lisa Feldman Barrett, a neuroscientist at Northeastern University, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.northeastern.edu\/2021\/08\/20\/you-cant-determine-emotion-from-someones-facial-expression-and-neither-can-ai\/\">said<\/a> the findings challenge common claims around emotion AI:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Certain companies claim they have algorithms that can detect anger, for example, when what really they have \u2014 under optimal circumstances \u2014 are algorithms that can probably detect scowling, which may or may not be an expression of anger. It\u2019s important not to confuse the de<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">script<\/a>ion of a facial configuration with inferences about its emotional meaning.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Method_acting\"><\/span>Method acting<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The researchers used professional actors because they have a \u201cfunctional expertise\u201d in emotion: their success depends on them authentically portraying a character\u2019s feelings.<\/p>\n<p>The actors were photographed performing detailed, emotion-evoking scenarios. It also showed that similar facial poses didn\u2019t reliably express the same emotional category.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Strike_a_pose\"><\/span>Strike a pose<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The team then asked additional groups of volunteers to assess the emotional meaning of each facial pose alone.<\/p>\n<p>They found that the judgments of the poses alone didn\u2019t reliably match the ratings of the facial expressions when they were viewed alongside the scenarios.<\/p>\n<p>Barrett said this shows the importance of context in our assessments of facial expressions:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>When it comes to expressing emotion, a face does not speak for itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>The study illustrates the enormous variability in how we express our emotions. It also further justifies the concerns around emotion recognition AI, which is already used in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/minda-zetlin\/ai-is-now-analyzing-candidates-facial-expressions-during-video-job-interviews.html\">recruitment<\/a>, law enforcement, and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2021\/02\/16\/tech\/emotion-recognition-ai-education-spc-intl-hnk\/index.html\">education<\/a>,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Greetings Humanoids!
