The <em>Friends<\/em> spinoff, created by Shana Goldberg-Meehan and Scott Silveri, ended with a whimper 15 years ago as Latin America\u2019s WBTV aired the final eight episodes, which NBC opted not to air stateside, in the summer of 2006.<\/p>\n<p>The story of <em>Joey<\/em> started three years prior, in July 2003, before the final season of <em>Friends<\/em> started airing. That\u2019s when Jeff Zucker, then the president of NBC Entertainment, announced that Joey Tribbiani, Matt LeBlanc\u2019s fan-favorite <em>Friends<\/em> character, would be getting his own spinoff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou probably would never have predicted this when it began, but over the evolution of that show, Joey has emerged as the character that America roots for and loves,\u201d Zucker told the Television Critics Association at the time, per the <em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/entertainment\/tv\/bal-friends-joey0724-story.html\">Associated Press<\/a><\/em>. \u201c[Viewers want] to see what h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ens to him as his life goes on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marta Kauffman and David Crane created <em>Friends<\/em> in collaboration with executive producer Kevin Bright, but Zucker told reporters that Bright was the only one of the trio who would be an executive producer for <em>Joey<\/em>\u2014which, looking back, wasn\u2019t a good sign. Still, Zucker said that Kauffman and Crane had given <em>Joey<\/em> their blessing, likening the situation to <em>Frasier<\/em> spinning off from <em>Cheers<\/em> with only some of <em>Cheers<\/em>\u2019 producers on board.<\/p>\n<p>Zucker also said that LeBlanc was the only <em>Friends<\/em> star approached for a spinoff\u2014effectively spoiling the yet-to-be-aired breakup between Joey and Rachel (Jennifer Aniston), who had gotten together at the end of the penultimate season.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1010499\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1010499\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1010499\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/matt-leblanc-joey-tribbiani.jpeg\" alt=\"Matt LeBlanc, Joey Tribbiani, Joey\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/matt-leblanc-joey-tribbiani.jpeg 1352w, https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/matt-leblanc-joey-tribbiani-193x289.jpeg 193w, https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/matt-leblanc-joey-tribbiani-380x570.jpeg 380w, https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/matt-leblanc-joey-tribbiani-768x1152.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/matt-leblanc-joey-tribbiani-300x450.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-1010499\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Paul Drinkwater\/NBCU Photo Bank<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>But behind the scenes, the Powers That Be had actually approached three other <em>Friends<\/em> stars about the prospect of reprising their parts on a spinoff, according to Bright. \u201cAt first it was the obvious choices of who they wanted to do a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> with and Jennifer was up there first, but she wanted to do movies and she wasn\u2019t interested in television,\u201d Bright told <em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2018\/10\/02\/friends-producer-reveals-joey-wasnt-first-choice-for-spin-off-series-he-wasnt-even-second-or-third-7998161\/\">Metro.co.uk<\/a><\/em> in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we liked the idea of a Monica (Courteney Cox) and Chandler (Matthew Perry) series, but everyone at the end, strangely enough, while they were grateful for doing the show, they didn\u2019t want to play those parts anymore,\u201d Bright added.<\/p>\n<p>So the spinoff went to LeBlanc. \u201cMatt loved Joey and he didn\u2019t mind playing Joey,\u201d said Bright.<\/p>\n<p>And so <em>Joey<\/em> was born, premiering on September 9, 2004, in its predecessor\u2019s old Thursday-night time slot. In the show, Joey moved to Los Angeles to advance his acting career, moving in with his nerdy nephew Michael (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/tvinsider.com\/people\/paulo-costanzo\">Paulo Costanzo<\/a>). Also on hand were Joey\u2019s older sister and Michael\u2019s mom, Gina (Drea de Matteo); Joey\u2019s landlord and eventual love interest, Alex (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/tvinsider.com\/people\/andrea-anders\">Andrea Anders<\/a>); and his Hollywood agent, Bobbie, played by Jennifer Coolidge. (<em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/10\/03\/arts\/television\/jennifer-coolidge-queen-of-the-ugly-stepsisters.html\">The New York Times<\/a><\/em> reported in 2004 that Coolidge\u2019s <em>Joey<\/em> part was \u201csomething of a consolation prize\u201d after NBC shelved a starring vehicle for her.)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1010500\" style=\"width: 758px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1010500\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1010500 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/matt-leblanc-drea-de-matteo-paulo-costanzo-joey-748x570.jpeg\" alt=\"Matt LeBlanc, Drea de Matteo, Paulo Costanzo, Joey\" width=\"748\" height=\"570\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/matt-leblanc-drea-de-matteo-paulo-costanzo-joey-748x570.jpeg 748w, https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/matt-leblanc-drea-de-matteo-paulo-costanzo-joey-379x289.jpeg 379w, https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/matt-leblanc-drea-de-matteo-paulo-costanzo-joey-768x585.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/matt-leblanc-drea-de-matteo-paulo-costanzo-joey-570x434.jpeg 570w, https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/matt-leblanc-drea-de-matteo-paulo-costanzo-joey.jpeg 2028w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 748px) 100vw, 748px\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-1010500\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mitch Haddad\/NBC\/NBCU Photo Bank<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>When the show premiered, many critics were underwhelmed, to put it mildly. <em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-2004-sep-09-wk-brown9-story.html\">Los Angeles Times<\/a><\/em>\u2019 Paul Brownfield said <em>Joey<\/em> felt \u201ckind of bereft\u2014a subplot cast into the world and left searching for its main story.\u201d <em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/archive\/lifestyle\/2004\/09\/09\/without-friends-joey-is-his-own-worst-enemy\/2004f90e-d38c-48f7-a87f-b92f4f169fc1\/\">The Washington Post<\/a><\/em>\u2019s Tom Shales said that Joey Tribbiani was \u201cstill a lovable dummy,\u201d but noted that \u201cthe ratio of lovable to dumb appears to have changed for the worse\u201d since the end of <em>Friends<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>And as Zucker had done a year prior, <em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/arts\/you-can-have-enough-friends\/article1333013\/\">The Globe and Mail<\/a><\/em>\u2019s John Doyle compared <em>Joey<\/em> to <em>Frasier<\/em>, though far less favorably. \u201c<em>Joey<\/em> is a lame, hollow and utterly unoriginal show, and it shouldn\u2019t be,\u201d Doyle wrote. \u201cYears ago, when <em>Cheers<\/em> ended after a long and successful run, NBC took one character, Frasier Crane, and launched a show about him. The first episode of <em>Frasier<\/em> was beautifully done \u2026 The relevant difference is that [the] Frasier Crane character was obviously a grownup. Nobody on <em>Friends<\/em> actually grew up. Oh, they got married and had kids but they were all adolescents, really. <em>Joey<\/em> continues the theme.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cwwKwkvOihE\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cwwKwkvOihE<\/a><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\"\/><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>Joey<\/em> aired a full first season, but NBC only gave the show\u2019s second season 13 episodes before pulling it from the schedule. The network brought the show back in March 2006, but that return episode snagged only 4 million viewers, almost a 50-percent drop in viewership since the prior episode and a small fraction of the 18.5 million viewers who turned in for the series premiere. After that one March episode, NBC canceled the show for good.<\/p>\n<p>Now, 15 years later, it seems <em>Joey<\/em> is disappearing from our cultural consciousness. Fans <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly don\u2019t consider <em>Joey<\/em> to be part of the <em>Friends<\/em> canon, <em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2016\/02\/the-forgotten-years-of-the-friends-saga.html\">Vulture<\/a><\/em> observes. The show wasn\u2019t available on Netflix while <em>Friends<\/em> was streaming there, and it\u2019s not currently available on HBO Max, <em>Friends<\/em>\u2019 new streaming home.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Intro - Joey (2004) Opening Credits\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/w-oyYogt_Ac?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Following the <em>Friends<\/em>\u2019 cast recent reunion, however, Bright gave his take on <em>Joey<\/em>\u2019s failure, indicating to <em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/friends-reunion-cast-reveals-creators-interview-1234959624\/\">The Hollywood Reporter<\/a><\/em> that NBC and Warner Bros. had overruled his ideas for \u201cthe real version of the spinoff\u201d and instead went with a storyline of which he was \u201cnot a fan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m the producer of the show and that storyline did not do service to the character,\u201d Bright said. \u201cJoey should have come out to Hollywood and had the time of his life. It should have been far more an <em>Entourage<\/em> than it was this family \u2018Joey needs to grow up\u2019 show. Joey would have gotten a pilot, come out to Hollywood and had the time of his life and gotten into all kinds of trouble. And we would have discovered new parts of Joey in the process. It would have been a lot more fun than the nerdy nephew and the barking sister.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bright said that everyone would have watched his version of <em>Joey<\/em>. \u201cBut that\u2019s what happens when you finish one show that\u2019s a giant hit: you go back to the back of the line and you don\u2019t know anything and the network and studio get their imprints on it,\u201d he explained. \u201cThat\u2019s not the way <em>Friends<\/em> came together, I can tell you that.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
