Pick a lightweight Linux distribution for best results and claw back some of the performance lost to hefty macOS updates.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Booting_on_Apple_Silicon\"><\/span>Booting on Apple Silicon<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Unfortunately, as of this writing in July 2021, this technique won\u2019t work on new <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>le Silicon Macs with the M1 system-on-chip or later. Corellium has already managed to\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/corellium.com\/blog\/linux-m1\">port Linux to run natively on an M1 chip<\/a>, but the process is much more complicated than simply writing a disk image file to a USB stick.<\/p>\n<p>Linux kernel version 5.13 includes <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/21\/06\/28\/apples-m1-now-supported-by-linux-kernel-in-version-513\">support for the new ARM-based chips<\/a>, so hopefully support for mainstream distros like Ubuntu isn\u2019t too far off.\u00a0Before you start, make sure you\u2019re using an Intel-based Mac. You can figure out which type of Mac you have using the Apple &gt; About This Mac menu.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>How to Check if Your Mac Is Using an Intel or Apple Silicon Processor<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Creating_Bootable_Linux_USB_Drives_in_macOS\"><\/span>Creating Bootable Linux USB Drives in macOS<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Format_Your_Drive\"><\/span>Format Your Drive<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>For best results, it\u2019s a good idea to format your USB drive to FAT before starting. Different Linux distributions have different space requirements, but around 4GB should be enough for most distributions.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-742218\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Screen-Shot-2021-07-20-at-14.00.19.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Disk Utility in macOS\" width=\"650\" height=\"401\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Launch Disk Utility (search for it with Spotlight, or find it in the Applications &gt; Utilities folder), then click on your USB drive. If you\u2019re satisfied you can erase the drive without losing data, click on \u201cErase\u201d and then choose \u201cMS-DOS (FAT)\u201d as the format and give it a name. Click Erase and wait for the process to complete.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Convert_Your_ISO\"><\/span>Convert Your ISO<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>With your Linux ISO downloaded, it\u2019s time to convert it to the IMG format so that it can be written as a mountable disk image. Open Terminal and enter the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>hdiutil convert \/path\/to\/downloaded.iso -format UDRW -o \/path\/to\/image<\/pre>\n<p>Replace <code>\/path\/to\/downloaded.iso<\/code> with the location of your downloaded Linux ISO, for example if <code>ubuntu.iso<\/code>\u00a0is in your Downloads folder, you can type <code>~\/Downloads\/ubuntu.iso<\/code>.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, you\u2019ll need to provide a destination in which the DMG will be placed (no need to add the \u201c.dmg\u201d extension). For ease, we\u2019d recommend using the same location for both. Following on from the example above, you could type <code>~\/Downloads\/ubuntu<\/code>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-742215\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Screen-Shot-2021-07-20-at-15.06.23.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Convert ISO to IMG with hdiutil command\" width=\"650\" height=\"416\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Write_to_USB\"><\/span>Write to USB<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>With your IMG file ready to go, it\u2019s time to write to USB. Head back to Terminal and type the following to get a list of drives:<\/p>\n<pre>diskutil list<\/pre>\n<p>You\u2019re looking for the identifier for the USB drive you just formatted. If you gave it a name like \u201cLINUX\u201d then you should be able to spot it under the \u201cNAME\u201d column. The size of the disk (for example, 8GB) may give it away too.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-742213\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/diskutil_list.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Disk Utility listing drives\" width=\"650\" height=\"384\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Now that you know your identifier, you need to unmount that particular drive so that you can write your DMG file to it. To do this, use the following command replacing <code>diskX<\/code> with the identifier (for example, <code>disk3<\/code> in the screenshot above).<\/p>\n<pre>diskutil unmountDisk \/dev\/diskX<\/pre>\n<p>Finally, it\u2019s time to write your DMG file to your USB drive. You can do this with the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo dd if=\/path\/to\/image.dmg of=\/dev\/diskX bs=1m<\/pre>\n<p>You\u2019ll need to replace <code>\/path\/to\/image.dmg<\/code> with the path to the DMG file created above, and <code>\/dev\/diskX<\/code> with the disk identifier used above (for example, <code>disk3<\/code>). You will be prompted for your administrator password. Type it, then hit Enter to begin the copy. You may also be asked to grant Terminal permission to access a removable volume, which you should grant.<\/p>\n<p>Wait for your Mac to write the contents of the DMG to your drive. This could take a while depending on the size of the DMG and the speed of your Mac or USB drive. If you see a \u201cThe disk you inserted was not readable by this computer\u201d error, click \u201cIgnore\u201d and carry on.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-742214\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Screen-Shot-2021-07-20-at-15.20.25.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"A Disk Not Readable error message after creating a bootable drive.\" width=\"650\" height=\"424\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Boot_Linux_on_Your_Intel_Mac\"><\/span>Boot Linux on Your Intel Mac<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Power down your Intel Mac, then insert your USB drive if you haven\u2019t already done so. Press and hold the \u201cOption\u201d button then press and release the power button to start your Mac.<\/p>\n<p>Keep your finger held down on the \u201cOption\u201d button until you see a list of devices appear on-screen. You should see your boot drive, likely labeled \u201cMacintosh HD\u201d and a separate USB drive titled something like \u201cEFI Boot\u201d with a different icon.<\/p>\n<p>Click on your USB drive, then click on the upward-pointing arrow to start Linux. Your Mac will now boot from USB. If you decide to install Linux, consider a dual-boot\u00a0arrangement for your Mac.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hate_Terminal_Use_balenaEtcher_Instead\"><\/span>Hate Terminal?
