data-save-publication=\"false\">\n        <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       Washington Post writer Gene Weingarten, a two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/magazine\/gene-weingarten-you-cant-make-me-eat-these-foods\/2021\/08\/12\/e34996a8-efc0-11eb-81d2-ffae0f931b8f_story.html\" class=\"icon none\">is under fire for a column<\/a> in which he decried Indian food \u2014 specifically, Indian curries \u2014 as being foul-tasting. \u201cIt is as though the French passed a law requiring a wide swath of their dishes to be slathered in smashed, pureed snails,\u201d Weingarten wrote.<\/p>\n<p> Weingarten is not a food writer, but the world of food journalism has also come under fire in recent years for similar charges of cultural insensitivity. Questions are being raised as to whether <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.laweekly.com\/restaurant-critics-are-way-too-white\/\" class=\"icon none\">white restaurant critics can cover establishments<\/a> that specialize in cuisines outside their heritage and background.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       On <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a>, that sparked an outcry, with many charging that Weingarten is clueless about cuisine and, as a white man, culturally insensitive. \u201cGene Weingarten seems like a real \u2018poaches salmon in the dishwasher\u2019 kind of guy,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AngryBlackLady\/status\/1430021945991467008\" class=\"icon none\">said Imani Gandy<\/a>, a senior editor with the Rewire <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a> Group, on Twitter<br \/>\n        TWTR,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203180645\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.23%<\/bg-quote><span>.<\/span>\n      <\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>Padma Lakshmi, the prominent Indian-born television chef, was even stronger in her condemnation. \u201cWhat in the white nonsense is this?\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PadmaLakshmi\/status\/1429832223319072768\" class=\"icon none\">she tweeted<\/a>. And in a reference to India\u2019s sizable population, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PadmaLakshmi\/status\/1429834866670067717\" class=\"icon none\">she also declared<\/a>: \u201cOn behalf of 1.3 billion people, kindly f\u2013k off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Weingarten <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly writes his columns from a humorous perspective and used this one to speak to his aversion to a range of foods \u2014 not just Indian dishes, but also everything from Old Bay seasoning to anchovies. On Twitter, he did seemingly <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/geneweingarten\/status\/1429889354902671363\" class=\"icon none\">try to make amends<\/a> after the controversy over the column erupted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe column was about what a whining infantile ignorant d\u2014head I am. I should have named a single Indian dish, not the whole cuisine, &amp; I do see how that broad-brush was insulting. Apologies,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Weingarten didn\u2019t respond to a request to a MarketWatch request for any additional comment. Washington Post executive editor Sally Buzbee also didn\u2019t respond for comment.<\/p>\n<p>A correction has been added to Weingarten\u2019s column online, noting that the original version of the piece stated in error that \u201cIndian cuisine is based on one spice, curry, and that Indian food is made up only of curries.\u201d The correction went on to say that \u201cIndia\u2019s vastly diverse cuisines use many spice blends and include many other types of dishes\u201d and that the article had been updated.<\/p>\n<p>In his statement on Twitter, Weingarten also pointed to his error, saying \u201cyes, curries are spice blends, not spices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, Weingarten seemingly stood by his overall assessment of Indian cuisine. In a separate tweet, he said he \u201ctook a lot of blowback for my dislike of Indian food,\u201d so he decided to visit to visit Rasika, a well-regarded Washington, D.C., Indian restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFood was beautifully prepared yet still swimming with the herbs &amp; spices I most despise. I take nothing back,\u201d Weingarten  added.<\/p>\n<p>Roni Mazumdar, a restaurateur behind <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/05\/10\/dining\/dhamaka-review.html\" class=\"icon none\">some highly acclaimed Indian establishments<\/a> in New York City, says he believe intelligent and informed critics are fully capable of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roaching the cuisines from a variety of cultures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI personally think food is democratic.
