The project has existed since 2017 without much attention, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/pkb4yy\/someone-bought-an-nft-of-a-free-clipart-rock-for-dollar13-million\">Vice\u2019s Motherboard reported<\/a> \u2014 that is, until NFT sales broke through the mainstream last year. <\/p>\n<p>UK crypto-trader Tom Osman <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tomosman\/status\/1429908946949742592?s=20\">came forward<\/a> as the seller of EtherRock #42, which he purchased just <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tomosman\/status\/1424045244866301954\">a few weeks prior<\/a> at only 1.7 ETH, or about $4,800 at the time. \u201cI think this might be the best investment of my life so far,\u201d he said of the transaction. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/rock-nfts.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"EtherRocks\" class=\"wp-image-19244798\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/rock-nfts.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/rock-nfts.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/rock-nfts.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Crypto-traders are clamoring for these variously shaded rock doodles, called EtherRocks. They\u2019re free online yet worth potentially millions when purchased via non-fungible token (NFT).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Just last week, the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/etherrockprice\">rocks were selling<\/a> for a mere few hundred thousand dollars before spiking Aug. 23. <\/p>\n<p>EtherRock, as they\u2019re called, has become something of a status symbol among crypto-traders, according to Motherboard. EtherRock #42\u2019s current owner is reportedly also one of the few to snag a coveted CryptoPunk, paying 4,200 ETH in March, which was worth about $7.6 million at the time. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"\/>Earlier this week, crypto developer Justin Sun tweeted that he, too, had acquired an EtherRock for \u201chalf a million dollars\u201d \u2014 a figure closer to $600,000, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/etherscan.io\/tx\/0xbb5a13fe97b97d494eba4c5ffdec1c51ae060a460a64f5d39e150d32067964fa\">according to public records<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe more people hate the rock, the more it increases in price,\u201d Osman warned Motherboard, who first reported on EtherRock last week, when they were still $255,000. \u201cExpect it to sell for a multiple of [$1.3 million] soon.\u201d\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
