The supernatural teen romance dominated <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> at the time, and it also went on to garner positive reviews and an impressive worldwide gross of over US$350 million. Before <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mugen Train <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">came along to knock it down a spot, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Your Name<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was the second-highest grossing anime movie and the fourth-highest grossing movie in Japan.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I thought that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Your Name <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">absolutely deserved its achievements, even though it wasn\u2019t my favorite anime movie of 2016 (that would be <em>A Silent Voice<\/em>), but it took me a short while before I arrived at that stage.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Unexpected_Change\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><b>Unexpected Change<\/b><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Before <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Your Name<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Shinkai\u2019s repertoire seemed to consist mainly of shorts and gorgeous-looking melancholic films that scored various awards, but not record-breaking grosses. Most of these films \u2014 namely <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Voices of a Distant Star<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Place Promised in Our Early Days<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> 5 Centimeters per Second<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and The Garden of Words <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">featured relationships and distance (usually but not always geographical) as their <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">theme<\/a>s. The fantasy adventure<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Children Who Chase Lost Voices <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">did show that Shinkai was not solely bound to sad or bittersweet stories of romance (even if that movie had a major character motivated by love), but the promotional material for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Your Name<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> left little doubt that it, again, revolved around a relationship. The question was, would it be similar to the likes of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">5 Centimeters per Second<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Garden of Words<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To describe it simply, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Your Name<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is about a city boy, Taki, and a country girl, Mitsuha, who mysteriously find themselves swapping bodies. While annoyed and exasperated by the amusing impacts they leave on the other\u2019s life at first, they eventually develop feelings for each other as they converse through messages. It\u2019s easy to see why <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Your Name<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019s love story premise had a large appeal, even before knowing about the surprising twist involving the destruction of Mitsuha\u2019s town by a comet fragment in the past and various emotional gut punches the movie later delivers.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, when I first learned about the premise, I was initially a little disappointed that it seemed more commercial than previous Shinkai titles. I also remember seeing the poster for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Your Name<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> online and thinking, somewhat disapprovingly, that the character designs for its protagonists were a tad more cartoony than in previous Shinkai romance dramas.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;font-size: 12pt\">My stubborn aversion to these signs didn\u2019t help with my first watch, which was marked by confusion and dissonance. Within the first five minutes of the film, there is a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a>-style opening set to a J-rock tune, followed by a scene of a girl (we later learn that it\u2019s Taki in Mitsuha\u2019s body) confusingly groping her breasts after waking up. The presence of both comedy and a J-rock song in a Shinkai film \u2014 usually ever-serious and filled with piano or orchestral tracks \u2014 felt incomprehensible to me.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"21746\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PDSkFeMVNFs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Zenzenzense<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d kicks off the montage of Taki and Mitsuha\u2019s body-swapping high jinks, I felt as if a great betrayal had been committed by the movie for being so weirdly peppy, even if it wasn\u2019t for its entirety. Much of the remainder of the film barely registered in my head.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Of course, calling <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Your Name<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> a betrayal for utilizing a different tone than its predecessors \u2014 distance was still a central theme, in addition to references to the Japan earthquake and tsunami of 2011 \u2014 was a wild overreaction. Still, it certainly was jarring to experience a film from the director of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">5 Centimeters per Second <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Garden of Words <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">that was commercial-feeling and wasn\u2019t perpetually moody or serious, and it took me a while to process the shift. When I finally came to terms with what <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Your Name <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">was, and when some of my friends suggested watching it together, I decided to give it another chance.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201cThe main reason I remember my second viewing so well, however, was my reaction to\u00a0<em>Your Name<\/em>\u2019s emotional beats.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_New_Perspective\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><b>A New Perspective<\/b><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Giving <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Your Name<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> a second chance turned out to be the right call, although I felt a bit bad for abandoning another group of friends who were adding extra touches to our college assignment in the process. Now that I knew what sort of movie it was, I found myself appreciating it much more and compared it less to Shinkai\u2019s previous works.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Your Name (Japanese) - Coming Soon Trailer\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/27q1kdb3sNY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rather than griping about the RADWIMPS soundtrack and that \u201cZenzenzense\u201d montage, I nodded my head to the catchy tunes and took note of how they felt one with the movie and the respective scenes they were employed in. I found myself liking the main leads\u2019 chemistry \u2014 a mean feat on the movie\u2019s part since they don\u2019t interact face-to-face or even verbally for most of the runtime <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and rooting for them to get together. The side characters were also likeable, particularly Mitsuha\u2019s friends Tessie and Sayaka.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Visuals-wise, at the time, I only admired the film\u2019s gorgeous backgrounds, although they didn\u2019t feel as attention-grabbing as those in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">5 Centimeters Per Second <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Garden of Words<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. After rewatching scenes on YouTube and clips on <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sakugabooru.com\/post?tags=kimi_no_na_wa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sakugabooru<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> recently, however, I\u2019m amazed that I didn\u2019t notice the animation\u2019s craftsmanship back then, perhaps because I only cared for action animation in those days<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Simply put, I enjoyed my second viewing, although it still felt a bit weird to have a TV-style opening in a movie. The main reason I remember my second viewing so well, however, was my reaction to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Your Name<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019s emotional beats. While I was apathetic to them the first time around, the movie really did a number on me this time.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" Taki. But her endless wandering leads her to a slightly younger version of Taki instead of the high school student she had been body-swapping with. I felt Mitsuha\u2019s disappointment radiate through the screen when she realized that this Taki didn\u2019t know her yet, and the absolutely tender instrumental tune made the scene all the more effective. It also made the moment in which young Taki belatedly asks for Mitsuha\u2019s name and receives her hair ribbon, symbolizing the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/tvtropes.org\/pmwiki\/pmwiki.php\/Main\/RedStringOfFate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">red string of fate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> connecting them, feel poignant.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Almost immediately after, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Your Name<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> delivers one of its emotional climaxes. Thanks to supernatural reasons that I can never fully remember and after some very effective build-up, present Taki and Mitsuha meet briefly, for the first time, on a hilltop. Smiling at the sight of her, Taki closes his eyes for a moment and then says, \u201cMitsuha.\u201d A moment later, Mitsuha approaches him and whispers in disbelief, \u201cTaki-kun\u2026 Taki-kun. Taki-kun ga iru!\u201d (\u201cYou\u2019re here,\u201d although the cinema\u2019s subs were probably more interesting.)\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;font-size: 12pt\">I\u2019m not sure who started shedding tears first \u2014 Mitsuha, my friend, or me. However, I\u2019m absolutely certain that I had never felt so emotional in a cinema before. When I saw someone get up to leave the cinema, presumably for a toilet break, I joked to my friend that they were doing so to take a break from the emotional onslaught.
