American tech giant Microsoft has won a blockchain-related patent for techniques for implementing a cross-chain token management system.<\/p>\n

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), the agency granted<\/a> the patent to Microsoft\u2019s subsidiary Microsoft Technology<\/a> Licensing on Aug. 24.<\/p>\n

Filed in February 2019, the patent describes a \u201cledger-independent token service,\u201d or a software service enabling individuals and organizations to create and manage tokens across multiple distributed ledger networks and platforms.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Examples of such platforms in the patent filing included major blockchain platform Ethereum, IBM-backed Hyperledger Fabric, JPMorgan\u2019s enterprise blockchain platform Quorum, R3 Corda and Chain Core.<\/p>\n

The described computer system aims to provide the user with one or more \u201ctoken templates,\u201d with each of those corresponding to a type of physical or digital asset. The ledger-independent token service is designed to act as a single interface for managing the lifecycle of tokens across multiple blockchains, allowing developers to write code for transacting and managing tokens \u201c in a manner that is agnostic of the underlying distributed ledger networks.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to the patent\u2019s authors, the described system \u201cmakes development more efficient for emerging business use-cases that involve crossing ledger boundaries.\u201d<\/p>\n

Microsoft has been actively involved in blockchain-related development in recent years, filing a wide number of patent app<\/a>lications related to the cryptocurrency industry. Last year, the tech giant filed a patent for a cryptocurrency system enabling individuals to mine crypto using their body activity data in an effort to remove the need for specialized mining devices.<\/p>\n
