Fortunately, your old router is unlikely to give away any revealing information about you, but it\u2019s a good idea to reset it before you ship it off.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what you need to know.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Routers_Store_Very_Little_Information\"><\/span>Routers Store Very Little Information<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There are many different types of routers that vary in complexity and capability. These include simple network hubs that connect to an external modem, routers with combined ADSL or cable modems, and routers that include built-in 4G or 5G connectivity in case your home internet connection goes down.<\/p>\n<p>Even though the router is designed to route internet traffic to your devices, this data doesn\u2019t remain on the router for long. These devices have very little storage, and their main job is to take data from point A to point B in as little time as possible. Internet traffic isn\u2019t stored or recoverable, and much of it is encrypted anyway.<\/p>\n<p>A router is designed to store only the settings that you can change, including ISP login information, wireless network names and passwords, and rules that you have set up, like which DNS server to use or which ports to open. Services like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wigle.net\">Wigle<\/a> are used to create a map of known SSIDs so that a buyer could potentially find out where you lived by looking up the name, assuming that it\u2019s unique.<\/p>\n<p>Since the buyer or receiver of your old modem is going to need to reset it to make use of it, it makes sense for you to do this before you send it off just to cover your bases.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sell_Your_Router_or_Modem_After_Resetting_It\"><\/span>Sell Your Router or Modem After Resetting It<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Your router should have a button that you can press and hold to reset it to its factory settings. Next, you\u2019ll need to use a small, thin object like a paperclip to hit the reset switch located somewhere on the router. The exact steps might differ depending on the brand, but here are some examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Netgear:<\/strong> Press and hold the reset button for around <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/kb.netgear.com\/000038536\/How-do-I-reset-my-NETGEAR-cable-modem-router\">7 seconds<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Linksys:<\/strong>\u00a0Press and hold the reset button for <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=204a528a336ede4177fff0d84a044482&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.linksys.com%2Fus%2Fsupport-article%3FarticleNum%3D139791\">10-15 seconds<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>D-Link<\/strong>: Press and hold the reset button for <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/eu.dlink.com\/uk\/en\/support\/faq\/routers\/mydlink-routers\/dir-810l\/how-do-i-reset-my-router-to-factory-default-settings\">10 seconds<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>TP-Link<\/strong>: Hold the WPS\/RESET button until the SYS LED flashes quickly (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tp-link.com\/us\/support\/faq\/497\/\">over 10 seconds<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cisco:<\/strong>\u00a0Press and hold the reset button while powering on the router, and then release after <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dcloud-cms.cisco.com\/help\/reset-router\">10 seconds<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you\u2019re unsure whether the router has been reset, you can test it for yourself by connecting to it and checking the admin panel for any changes you\u2019ve made to the settings.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Old_Routers_Arent_Worth_Much\"><\/span>Old Routers Aren\u2019t Worth Much<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Routers are ten a penny, with ISPs often giving them away to new subscribers free of charge.
