Read on to discover how to update classic Ubuntu Linux, an official Ubuntu flavor, or virtually any Ubuntu-based distro.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_You_Need_to_Know_About_Updating\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"moka_anchor_AboutUpdating\">What You Need to Know About Updating<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ubuntu.com\/\">Ubuntu<\/a>\u00a0and most of its derivatives offer two methods for updating: a command-line interface tool (called <strong>APT<\/strong>) for those who don\u2019t mind using the terminal, and an app called <strong>Software Updater<\/strong> for those who prefer a comfortable desktop experience.\u00a0Software Updater in fact uses APT in the background, managing it for you so you don\u2019t have to remember any commands.<\/p>\n<p>Some Ubuntu-based distros have an app that\u2019s different but similar to Software Updater, like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/linuxmint.com\/\">Linux Mint<\/a>\u2018s Update Manager. Others allow you to update through an application browser, like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/elementary.io\/\">Elementary OS<\/a>\u2018s AppStore. The instructions below will work much the same for them.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind, however, that these updating methods only upgrade packages that you installed through Ubuntu\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudsavvyit.com\/10285\/how-to-add-the-universe-multiverse-and-restricted-repositories-in-ubuntu\/\">enabled repositories<\/a>. That means that if you downloaded and installed an app from a website, it won\u2019t get updated. The app may have its own built-in updating procedure, or you may need to again download and install the latest version. Check with the app\u2019s vendor to find out.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_note\"><p><strong>Note:<\/strong> You cannot update follow our instructions unless you\u2019re in the PC\u2019s\u00a0sudoers list. Not sure? If you installed Ubuntu on your device, you probably are. If you didn\u2019t and you run into problems, contact the person who installed Ubuntu for you.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Update_Ubuntu_in_the_Desktop\"><\/span>How to Update Ubuntu in the Desktop<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You can begin updating Ubuntu in the desktop by opening Software Updater. After that, you\u2019re free to use your nice and shiny up-to-date PC!<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Update_Ubuntu_in_the_Terminal\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"moka_anchor_CLI\">How to Update Ubuntu in the\u00a0Terminal<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Just like its ancestor, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.debian.org\/\">Debian<\/a>, Ubuntu uses the command line tool APT for managing packages. Ubuntu\u2019s derivatives use it too, like Xubuntu, Raspberry Pi OS, and Linux Mint. These instructions will work for them exactly the same.<\/p>\n<p>Open a terminal\u00a0and enter the following command to check for updates.<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt update<\/pre>\n<p>You\u2019ll be asked to confirm your password. Type it in and press Enter.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_note\"><p><strong>Note:<\/strong> You might not see any text or dots appear when you type your password. This is a normal security precaution.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>After APT checks all your repositories, it\u2019ll tell you how many package upgrades are available.
