{"id":331665,"date":"2021-08-27T18:50:47","date_gmt":"2021-08-27T15:50:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/apple-may-loosen-rules-on-app-store-fees-amid-class-action-lawsuit\/"},"modified":"2021-08-27T18:50:47","modified_gmt":"2021-08-27T15:50:47","slug":"apple-may-loosen-rules-on-app-store-fees-amid-class-action-lawsuit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/apple-may-loosen-rules-on-app-store-fees-amid-class-action-lawsuit\/","title":{"rendered":"#Apple may loosen rules on App Store fees amid class-action lawsuit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>le may loosen rules on App Store fees amid class-action lawsuit<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n        <\/aside>\n<p>Apple said it\u2019s willing to loosen the notoriously strict rules on payments inside the iPhone\u2019s App Store, making it easier for smaller developers to steer customers toward alternative payment methods as they look to sidestep the tech giant\u2019s stiff fees.<\/p>\n<p>In a partial concession as it scrambles to settle a class-action lawsuit from app developers who have accused it of abusing monopolistic market power, Apple said that while developers will remain barred from pitching alternative payment methods through their apps. <\/p>\n<p>At the same time, however, they\u2019ll now be allowed to collect contact information such as email addresses, then suggest alternative payment methods through those channels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDevelopers can use communications, such as email, to share information about payment methods outside of their iOS app,\u201d Apple said in a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/newsroom\/2021\/08\/apple-us-developers-agree-to-app-store-updates\/\">statement<\/a> late Thursday. \u201cAs always, developers will not pay Apple a commission on any purchases taking place outside of their app or the App Store.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Apple also said it will stick to its promise last year to cut its lofty, 30-percent commission on app revenues to 15 percent for developers who are making less than $1 million in yearly revenue.<\/p>\n<p>The company added that it will shell out $100 million to set up a \u201cDeveloper Assistance Fund\u201d that will dole out between $250 and $30,000 to developers whose sales were less than $1 million a year between June 2015 and April of this year. About 99 percent of developers will quality, according to the plaintiffs.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/apple-app-store-02.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"Apple app store\" class=\"wp-image-19265220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/apple-app-store-02.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/apple-app-store-02.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/apple-app-store-02.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>App Store commissions brought in $22 billion for Apple last year. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The settlement \u2014 which still must be approved by a federal judge in northern California \u2014 represents a slight loosening of Apple\u2019s control over developers that could be further changed when a ruling is handed down the separate, closely-watched Apple vs. Epic suit, which also centers around Apple\u2019s payments rules.\u00a0That ruling could come within weeks.<\/p>\n<p>The move may also be intended to assuage concerns raised by lawmakers who have slammed the company\u2019s App Store payments policies as essential parts of its monopoly power.<\/p>\n<p>Since Apple brought in a reported $22 billion from App Store commissions last year, any change to the company\u2019s payments policy could have expensive consequences. <\/p>\n<p>But Apple\u2019s critics do not appear to be letting up.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s move only adds to the momentum and further exposes rampant anticompetitive abuses in the app markets,\u201d Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2021\/08\/26\/apple-app-store-payment-settlement\/\">told the Washington Post<\/a>. \u201cThe fox guarding the hen house status quo will remain until there are clear and enforceable rules for Apple and Google to play by.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in August, Blumenthal introduced a Senate bill alongside Minnesota Democrat Amy Klobuchar and Tennessee Republican Marsha Blackburn that would bar Apple and Google from requiring app developers to use their payments systems. A similar bipartisan bill targeting the companies\u2019 \u201cstranglehold\u201d has been proposed in the House.<\/p>\n<p>Jason Kint \u2014 the head of a trade group representing digital <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> companies including the Associated Press, NBCUniversal and New York Post parent company <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a> Corp. \u2014 said the changes Apple announced Thursday were more style than substance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApple wants this to be big news,\u201d Kint <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jason_kint\/status\/1431091627976806400\">wrote<\/a> on Twitter. \u201cI\u2019m digesting but certainly looks like their preferred outcome and attempt to use proactive PR to make this go away.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Spotify also slammed Apple\u2019s proposal, saying it failed to address even the most basic aspects of the App Store\u2019s \u201canticompetitive and unfair\u201d practices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are attempting to distract policymakers and regulators and slow down the momentum that\u2019s building around the world to address their behavior,\u201d said the company\u2019s chief legal officer, Horacio Gutierrez. \u201cApple has been allowed to abuse their dominant position for years, and we continue to seek real reforms to ensure that companies can innovate and compete fairly, on a level playing field.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But attorneys for the developers who sued Apple framed the proposed settlement as a big win for the little guy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis hard-won settlement will bring meaningful improvements to US iOS developers who distribute their digital wares through the App Store, especially for those small developers who bring so much creativity and energy to their work,\u201d said Steve Berman, who represented the developers.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
